Chapter 8: Travel Around
Introduction
Chapter 8, Travel Around, takes children on a musical journey across India through songs in different languages. Children learn a song from their elders, play a loud-and-soft singing game, and say rhythms with syllables. They also sing folk songs in Odia, Kashmiri, Konkani and Tamil.
What's in this Chapter
- What languages do you and your friends speak at home?
- Learn a song from your elders on any topic (seasons, festivals, patriotism). Ask them to write it, and present it to the class.
- One child leaves the class while an object such as a water bottle or duster is hidden.
- When the child returns, the group sings louder as the child comes closer to the object and softer as the child goes away.
- Changing loud and soft is called dynamics.
- A bullock cart moves slowly and merrily towards "my beautiful village".
- On the way there are mountains, a flowing river, chirping birds, blooming flowers and village children dancing under a mango tree.
- It is in a four-beat cycle: clap or twirl at the start of each cycle.
- Say "Ek – Do – Teen – Char" to a steady beat.
- In konnakol, a style where the voice makes rhythm, the syllables are tha dhi dhom num.
- Hindustani style uses syllables like dha dha te te, dha dha tun na.
- Say them with claps or dandia sticks.
