Chapter 2: Plants in Art
Introduction
Chapter 2, Plants in Art, takes children outdoors. The book says they will understand the importance of plants through stories and explore their beauty on nature walks in gardens, parks, fields, farms or any safe wild patch nearby. They observe lines, shapes, colours and patterns in nature and connect them with designs found in clothes. They also make their own designs for dresses, greeting cards, page borders and stencils.
What's in this Chapter
- Visit a school garden, park, field or farm with a drawing book and pencil.
- Gently touch and look closely at leaves, flowers, stems, bark, insects, butterflies, branches, fruits, seeds and roots.
- Questions to think about: What kinds of lines, shapes, colours and patterns do you see? How do you feel touching them?
- Draw and colour three or four leaves, flowers or birds of different shapes.
- Make your own natural colours by crushing and pounding small bits of fruit, vegetable, root, flower or leaves with a little water.
- A grill is also called a jali. Patterns from nature or geometrical shapes are carved in jalis.
- Look at window and door grills, visit a building or monument with a carved jali, draw its patterns, and fill empty spaces with your own jali pattern.
- Fold an old newspaper in many alternating folds.
- Draw two or three leaf shapes, keep the folds aligned, cut out the shapes, open the folds and colour your jali.
- Use it as a stencil to make a design on paper.
- Be very careful with scissors, and help a friend who has difficulty.
- Draw a picture telling a story about plants or trees.
- Find plant designs on clothes, textiles and other things at home and draw them.
- Make a greeting card or page border using paper, rags, newspaper, thread and natural materials like seeds and fallen petals.
- The book's rule: avoid plucking fresh flowers and leaves from plants.
