Chapter 16: Imagine
Introduction
Chapter 16, Imagine, is Act 2 of the Theatre unit. Vidushaka invites children to "create new worlds, become different people and get into new exciting situations!" How? "Through your minds! What you think becomes the reality!" This act has two scenes. Situational Perceptions is about acting out situations and giving objects new uses. Visions of Sound is about turning sounds into movement and pictures.
You will learn: body language, interpretation, communication through creativity, imagination, and the difference between hearing and listening.
What's in this Chapter
Scene 3 – Situational Perceptions
- Sit in a circle. When your number is called, jump into the invisible magic pit. This time it holds a situation, not an object.
- Act as if you are part of it while others guess. No talking is allowed!
- A situation is created when a set of actions is done together.
- Basic: getting ready and coming to school; falling down and going to the doctor.
- Advanced: two students act together, e.g. one is the patient and the other the doctor.
- Communication improves when you combine action (body language) with expression, and this needs creativity and imagination.
- The teacher gives an everyday object (pen, duster, chalk) and each child uses it as something else. Others guess, and no idea may be repeated.
- Rule: the new object should resemble the original in shape. A pen can be a toothbrush, comb or ladle, but not a book, helmet or shoe.
- The book's practice examples: a pencil box, handkerchief, water bottle, laptop, treasure box, a door opening.
- Basic: pen, chalk, duster. Advanced: a book, bag or bigger objects.
Scene 4 – Visions of Sound
- Close your eyes, listen with full attention and notice your feelings and the pictures in your mind.
- Then open your eyes and respond creatively: dance, move, react or express, without talking.
- Basic: rhythms of local drums, whistling, recorded instrumental music (flute, ektara).
- Advanced: groups create a simple scene. Lively music might become a festival, and deep drum sounds a mystery or exploration.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Imagination lets us create new worlds and situations; a situation is a set of actions done together.
- ✓In Magic Pit (Situation), children act a situation without talking and others guess it.
- ✓In Object Improvisation, an object is used as something else of similar shape (a pen as a toothbrush, comb or ladle).
- ✓Sounds create feelings and pictures in the mind; children respond to sounds with movement.
- ✓Listening means paying attention to understand, absorb and respond; it is different from hearing.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Seat children in a circle and use random numbers so everyone gets a turn.
- →Model one situation silently before asking children to try.
- →Explain the shape rule with a pen example before Object Improvisation.
- →Use recorded instrumental music (flute, ektara, local drums) with no vocals for Sound Improvisation.
- →Ask children to close their eyes and describe the pictures that came to mind.
- →Discuss hearing vs listening with a classroom example.
- →Hold Circle Time discussion and feedback after each activity.
📋 Assessment Questions
