Chapter 7: Feel the Rhythm
Introduction
Chapter 7, Feel the Rhythm, says rhythm is very important in music. Children find steady beats around them, make rhythms with their bodies, learn tabla bols and the seven notes (swaras), and sing songs in many languages. The chapter also introduces Indian music words such as taala, laya, sam and aavartan.
What's in this Chapter
- Follow the pictured pattern of clap, click, stamp and stomp and create more four-beat rhythms.
- A clock ticking, a tap dripping or a bird chirping can give a steady beat.
- Rustling leaves, a pressure-cooker whistle and honking cars in traffic don't have a steady beat.
- Give numbers to body sounds: clap = 1, snap = 2, stomp = 3, mouth sound = 4.
- Read patterns like 1 2 3 4 and 2 3 1 4, then make your own.
- Count while clapping, and change where the clap goes: left, right, above your head, or in silence.
- Then add tabla bols "dha ge na ti na ka dhi na". This taala is called keherva.
- Aadi tala has 8 beats: ta ka dhi mi – ta ka jha nu.
- Do You Know: the taala concept is first mentioned in the Samaveda, and North and South Indian taala systems were not distinct till the 16th century.
- The seven notes are Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni, followed by Sa at a higher pitch. Together they are called a saptak.
- Do You Know: the Natya Shastra, written by Bharata Muni, connects each swara with an emotion.
- Laya means rhythm or tempo. It is steady like a heartbeat but can be faster or slower, so children try the song at different speeds.
- Listen to Shyamale Meenakshi, by Muthuswami Dikshitar (Sanskrit, raga Shankarabharanam, tala Adi).
- Learn dadra, a 6-beat taala: dha dhi na / dha ti na.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Rhythm is very important in music; some sounds have a steady beat (clock, dripping tap) and some don't (traffic horns, pressure cooker).
- ✓Body sounds (clap, snap, stomp, mouth sound) can make rhythm patterns.
- ✓Keherva (dha ge na ti na ka dhi na) and aadi tala have 8 beats; dadra has 6 beats.
- ✓The seven notes Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni make a saptak; the Natya Shastra links each swara to an emotion.
- ✓Taala is a rhythmic cycle, laya is tempo, sam is the first beat and aavartan is one cycle.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start every class with a 4-beat body-percussion warm-up.
- →Use the number-to-sound map to let children 'read' and write rhythms.
- →Recite keherva and dadra with claps before playing them on any instrument.
- →Use a tanpura app or harmonium drone while singing sargam.
- →Tell the Naradiya Shiksha story with animal pictures to make the notes memorable.
- →Sing the same song slow and fast so children feel laya.
- →Invite local musicians to show tabla bols or a drum.
