Chapter 5: Festivals, Occasions, and Celebrations
Introduction
Chapter 5, Festivals, Occasions, and Celebrations, says we celebrate many festivals and occasions throughout the year, and "this lights up our hearts and our homes". We show our joy through food, home decoration, music, dance, special dresses and people coming together. Children get to know visual-arts traditions that create a festive feel: floor and wall designs, garlands, torans and lanterns. They do activities based on local art traditions from their own homes and neighbouring communities.
What's in this Chapter
- Where have you seen designs on floors or walls, and when do we decorate them?
- Make a floor design. Rangolis can also be made with dots and lines: join dots to create patterns.
- Step 1: take a thread about three feet long, or your arm's length.
- Step 2: stick paper, leaves, flowers and so on to it in a pattern.
- Step 3: hang your toran at an entrance.
- Colour two paper strips, one in the colour of a flower you like and the other in a different colour.
- Decorate them with designs, wrap them around your wrists and fix with glue or tape to make bracelets.
- Then make anklets and other jewellery from natural materials, and exchange them with classmates or give them as gifts.
