Chapter 3: Animals in Art
Introduction
Chapter 3, Animals in Art, reminds children that birds, insects and animals are all around us: "some of them are seen in the sky, some in water, some on earth, and others underground." Observing animals helps children notice their shapes, sizes, colours, textures, unique marks and patterns. Children explore animal homes and stories, and create artworks using imagination and different materials.
What's in this Chapter
- Imagine an animal story and draw it in two or three sequences: what happened first, what happened next, and so on.
- Draw and colour animals, birds and insects found nearby.
- Step 1: choose an animal.
- Step 2: observe the lines, shapes and colours on its face.
- Step 3: draw the mask with the animal's eyes, nose and ears.
- Step 4: make the mask with available materials.
- The Teacher's Note suggests groups of 3–4 children.
- Wear the mask and "bring the animal alive": walk like it, make its sounds, imagine how it would play and what it would say.
- As a group, make and enact a story about a day in the life of animals. This links to the theatre unit of the book.
- What shapes do you see in an elephant, and in other animals?
- Close your eyes and visualise the shapes, think which shapes can make its body, draw the animal, then colour it.
- Imagine a pet that lives in water, on land, underground, or all of them, and give it a name.
- Plan its home, drawn in the book's space, using materials from natural surroundings.
