Chapter 20: Integrating All Art Forms
Introduction
The last chapter of Bansuri–I, Integrating All Art Forms, brings together everything children learnt in visual arts, music, dance and theatre. The book explains that all art forms are different, yet share many features and are connected. Swara, laya, bhava and taala relate to all of them, and each has movement, rhythm and "a language of their own to communicate". We can express our emotions through art.
Do You Know – Bansuri:
What's in this Chapter
- A four-line Sanskrit verse by Nandikeshwara in the *Abhinaya Darpana*, composed around a thousand years ago. Artists often recite it before a performance:
Angikam bhuvanam yasya, vachikam sarva vangmayam, aharyam chandra taradi, tam vande sattvikam Shivam.
- Meaning: "Where the physical body is the universe, speech or song is the essence of all sounds, ornamentation is the Moon and the stars. I bow down to that supreme divinity."
- It brings together four parts of performance:
- Angika: physical performance with movement, action and expression.
- Vachika: speech, dialogue, songs and lyrics with action.
- Aharya: costumes, jewellery, sculpture and painting.
- Sattvika: the deepest emotional and spiritual experience for the artiste and the audience.
- Make a paper bansuri: draw a bansuri on thick chart paper, roll it into a cylinder, glue the edges and make small holes.
- Draw a scene around a bansuri, create a story, act it with actions, imagine yourself as a bansuri, and make movements to its tune.
- The Teacher's Note suggests listening to the bansuri and imagining Lord Shri Krishna playing it in the fields while leading his cows.
- Make a flower in the centre of a sheet, and each child adds something to make a garden or forest.
- Create a story about flowers, birds, trees and animals.
- Move as if walking through a forest, react to what you imagine, and create forest sounds such as birds chirping and water flowing.
- Discuss how it is celebrated, the special food, the decorations, and its songs and dances.
- Draw a rangoli or decorations with paper cut-outs, learn a festival song and sing it using kitchen utensils.
- Share an incident, enact a story, move to the song, and draw the traditional dresses.
- The Teacher's Note says the core idea is to build connections between art forms, and groups can present in the school assembly.
