Chapter 19: Activities

Introduction

Chapter 19, Activities, is Act 5, the closing act of the Theatre unit in Bansuri–I. It is short and fun: children make a story from pictures, try a focus activity, and say goodbye to their guide Vidushaka until next year.

What's in this Chapter

  • Make Your Own Story:
  • - Combine the pictures given in the book to make your own story. You can use them in any order.

    - "Let the story be as creative and unique as possible."

  • Focus Activity – Counting Balls in Circles:
  • 1. Count the number of balls in each circle separately, starting from the outer circle.

    2. Add them up.

    3. Count them all together.

    4. Are both numbers the same?

    5. Compare your number with your friends'.

This uses the focus and alertness children practised in Act 1, since theatre needs full concentration.

  • Vidushaka's Goodbye:
  • - "Taking you through so many fun activities, I didn't realise we have come to the end of this year's work. But we have just started the journey!"

    - He promises new journeys next year.

    - His most important message: "There is no right or wrong answer here. All your ideas are awesome. Whatever you are doing in theatre, make sure you enjoy and have fun!"

    - "SEE YOU NEXT YEAR, LITTLE STAR … NAMASTE!"

Looking Back at the Theatre Unit

The five acts built skills step by step:

  • Act 1 – Explore: alertness, focus and communicating without words.
  • Act 2 – Imagine: situations, object improvisation, and hearing vs listening.
  • Act 3 – Let's Create: role play with speech, and teamwork.
  • Act 4 – Look Around: observation, storytelling and India's theatre forms.
  • Act 5 – Activities: creative storytelling and focus.
  • Key Ideas

  • Pictures can be arranged in any order to make many different stories.
  • Counting in two ways, one circle at a time and all together, checks our focus and accuracy.
  • In theatre there are no wrong ideas; enjoyment matters most.
  • Words to Learn

  • Combine (जोड़ना): put together
  • Order (क्रम): the arrangement of things
  • Unique (अनोखा): one of a kind
  • Focus (ध्यान/एकाग्रता): full attention
  • Outer (बाहरी): on the outside
  • Compare (तुलना करना): check how things are alike or different
  • Journey (यात्रा): a trip; here, a learning path
  • Namaste (नमस्ते): a respectful greeting
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Cut pictures from old magazines and let the child arrange them into a story in different orders.
  • Draw circles with dots and play the counting game, then check the answers together.
  • Celebrate the end of the unit with a short class performance of favourite theatre games.
  • Remind children that every idea is welcome.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Using the pictures only in the printed order: any order is allowed, so be creative.
  • Rushing the counting and getting different totals: count slowly and carefully.
  • Worrying about "right answers" in theatre: all ideas are awesome.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Act 5 ends the theatre unit with creative storytelling from pictures used in any order.
    • ✓The focus activity asks children to count balls in each circle from the outside, add them, count all together and compare.
    • ✓Focus and alertness practised earlier help children get the counting right.
    • ✓Vidushaka's message: there is no right or wrong answer, all ideas are awesome, and theatre should be enjoyed.
    • ✓The five acts (Explore, Imagine, Let's Create, Look Around, Activities) build theatre skills step by step.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Give each group the pictures and let them present different story orders.
    • →Run the focus activity silently and then compare results aloud.
    • →Discuss why two counting methods should give the same total.
    • →Revisit favourite games from Acts 1–4 as a year-end celebration.
    • →Reinforce the message that every idea is valued.
    • →Invite families to watch a short end-of-year performance.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the child create a clear story by combining pictures in their own order?
    2. Does the child count accurately and check the total both ways?
    3. Can the child name at least three acts of the theatre unit and one skill from each?
    4. Does the child share ideas confidently without fear of being 'wrong'?
