Chapter 15: Explore
Introduction
Chapter 15, Explore, opens the Theatre unit. Theatre is "a fun way of making stories come alive!" Ideas, emotions, situations and stories come to life in front of you. If you have played pretend with friends or made stories with your toys, "you are already good in theatre!"
Chapters in this unit are written like a drama script: Act = chapter and Scene = lesson. The guide is Vidushaka, a character from traditional Indian and Sanskrit theatre who links scenes with humour and antics. Here he is the children's friend who introduces the ideas of theatre.
Theatre needs the space around you and the space within you (your mind). The teacher needs a spacious room or playground with no sharp objects, and should demonstrate each activity first.
What's in this Chapter (Act 1)
Scene 1 – Walk of Wonder. You will learn alertness and focus, visualisation, concentration, teamwork, facial expression and body language.
- Walk randomly without circling or touching others.
- The teacher calls speeds: 5 is normal, 1 is slowest, 10 is fastest (no running), and later adds "freeze".
- Exploring means "going from the unknown to the known": searching to learn new things.
- Basic: "walk like you are walking on thorns", "as if the floor is slippery due to oil spillage", "on soft cotton".
- Advanced: "barefoot on ice… a cold wind… the strong wind blows your muffler away".
- After each activity comes Circle Time, where everyone sits in a circle for discussion and feedback.
- Follow the calls SIT, TURN and JUMP, then with their meanings swapped.
- Advanced: IDLI = sit, VADA = stand, SAMBHAR = jump, hidden inside a story.
- Staying alert and focused matters in theatre: "even a few seconds of delay can spoil the entire show".
Scene 2 – Communicate Without Talking. Communication is "the sharing of ideas, thoughts or feelings between two or more people". Some people talk in sign language with hand gestures.
- Freeze like a statue when the teacher claps, and others guess the action. There are no right or wrong answers.
- Basic: gestures (hand on chin for thinking). Advanced: postures (farming, painting, sawing wood).
- Creativity is "the ability to produce something new, original and sometimes unusual."
- Groups of 5–6 plan for 3 minutes, then show a scene with their bodies and no talking.
- Basic: watching TV, cricket, a bus. Advanced: a market, farming, a marriage.
- Using the body to communicate is called body language.
- Pick an imaginary object from an invisible pit and use it; others guess.
- Basic: a pen, book, coffee mug. Advanced: hammer and nail, vegetable and knife, toothbrush and paste.
- Along with body language, expression (what is on your face) matters, and together they are communication.
