Chapter 14: Dance with Nature
Introduction
Chapter 14, Dance with Nature, asks: "Have you ever seen a dance of nature? What kinds of movements are there in nature?" Our surroundings are full of dancing elements, and nature has its own special dance movements. Children copy the smooth, flowing movements of trees and flowers and the actions of animals and birds. They then tell a story of the seasons through dance and create a dance on a regional song.
What's in this Chapter
- With your hands, arms and body, show smooth and flowing movements like the gentle movements in nature.
- Nature has many trees and flowers of different shapes. Observe animals, birds, butterflies and insects.
- How does an elephant walk? How does a monkey behave? Copy them using full arms, long steps and your whole body.
- Add steps and rhythm, and create music with your voice.
- Choose a bird, animal or element of nature and show it with large and tiny body parts.
- Example: a peacock dancing in 4 beats in a soothing way. Move your head front and back, spread out both hands, and walk on your toes.
- Choose a theme: seasons (summer, monsoon, winter, spring), a day in the forest, or heavy rain.
- Summer: the sun, with a circular motion and a tired body.
- Winter: wind, swinging your hands from side to side.
- Monsoon: rain and storm, with big steps, turns and spins.
- Spring: playing Holi, as you like.
- This needs a lot of coordination and understanding between dancers.
- Do you know regional songs from different parts of India? Create steps with friends. A teacher or parent can suggest the song and help identify the beats.
- Put together solo, duet or group dances, and perform in the school assembly after lots of practice.
- About folk dances, the book says:
- most are performed in a group, and every folk dance has a proper theme;
- they are performed during rituals, get-togethers, festivals and celebrations;
- they are performed by all together.
