Chapter 13: I Play and Dance
Introduction
Chapter 13, I Play and Dance, invites children to observe dance steps and the sounds of musical instruments closely. The book says there are several patterns in the steps, and "the movement of the dance depends upon the rhythm of the musical instruments". Children build movement patterns, dance with instruments and props, and explore 2-, 3- and 4-beat rhythms in groups.
What's in this Chapter
- Build a movement like tap–tap–toe–tap or tap–tap–heel–heel–tap, with clapping, tapping your foot in a rhythmic pattern. (The book prints "heal"; it means heel.)
- Move in shapes such as circles, spirals and lines.
- Count the rhythm together: 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Name the musical instruments shown, and use available instruments to create rhythmic movements.
- Kitchen utensils can be musical instruments too.
- Use a prop such as a ribbon or ring to explore new movements.
- Group 1 shows movements for the song.
- Group 2 sings the song.
- Group 3 gives the beats.
- The groups must coordinate.
- Children know 4-beat rhythms; now they explore a 3-beat rhythm.
- Syllables: one, two, three, or tha ki ta, or step, tap, step.
- Group 1 counts 2 beats, Group 2 counts 3 beats and Group 3 counts 4 beats.
- Count one after another while clapping and tapping the foot, moving in coordination.
- Practising together is necessary, and matching movements in a duet or group takes a lot of practice.
- Reflect: Which instrument did I use? Am I good at coordinating with my friend?
