Chapter 12: Dance for Joy

Introduction

Chapter 12, Dance for Joy, explains that dance means "telling a story using your whole body and finding ways to express yourself without words". Dance can show everyday activities in a stylish, artistic way, and each person can bring new ideas and movements. Children explore their body parts, move to rhythm, tell their daily routine through dance, and learn about folk dance.

What's in this Chapter

  • Activity 1 – Know my Body Parts:
  • - Breathe in while raising your hands, and move in a four-beat rhythm with the breathing exercise. This raises your energy.

    - "Our breath is like music in our dance." Breathe in and out as in Yoga.

    - Our body is "a magical kit of amazing parts". In dance, body parts are of two types:

    - Large body parts: head, arms, legs and waist.

    - Tiny body parts: shoulders, eyes, eyebrows, eyeballs, cheeks, nose, jaw, lips, teeth, tongue, chin, face, and limbs such as heels, ankles, toes and fingers.

    - Time to Shake! Use both kinds to show the daily tasks you perform.

  • Activity 2 – Move the Body to the Rhythm:
  • - Imagine playing outdoors in nature with friends. Show how you use your eyes, nod your head, and move your lips, hands and fingers, hopping or running with big steps.

    - Imitate how birds, animals and trees use their body parts.

    - Count in rhythm: "one, two, three, four – four, three, two, one".

  • Activity 3 – Routine Story in Dance:
  • - Show in dance: waking up, having breakfast, eating tasty food, having lots of homework, riding a bicycle, how an old person walks, and flying like a bird.

    - "You are a story teller and this dance is a special tale."

    - Reflect: Did I use big and tiny body parts? How did I tell stories? Did I coordinate with my friend?

  • Activity 4 – Your Folk Dance:
  • - Folk dance means traditional, community-based dance forms performed while celebrating festivals. They differ from one region to another.

    - Recall a festival: what music did you hear and what clothes did people wear?

  • Activity 5: Draw a picture of a folk dance with 3–4 people.
  • Key Ideas

  • Dance is storytelling with the whole body, without words.
  • Breathing in rhythm gives energy; breath is like music in dance.
  • Large and tiny body parts both help us express.
  • Everyday actions can become a dance story.
  • Folk dances are traditional and community-based, and differ from region to region.
  • Activities from the Book

Breathing with movement, showing tasks with large and tiny body parts, nature-play movements in rhythm, a routine-story dance, recalling folk dances, and drawing a folk dance.

    Words to Learn

  • Express (व्यक्त करना): show feelings or ideas
  • Body parts (शरीर के अंग): head, arms, legs and so on
  • Waist (कमर): the middle part of the body
  • Eyebrows (भौंहें): hair above the eyes
  • Ankle (टखना): the joint between leg and foot
  • Breathe (साँस लेना): take air in and out
  • Routine (दिनचर्या): things we do every day
  • Folk dance (लोकनृत्य): a traditional community dance
  • Region (क्षेत्र): an area of a country
  • Coordinate (तालमेल बिठाना): move well together
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Play "Simon says" with large and tiny body parts: "move only your eyebrows!"
  • Ask the child to dance their morning routine while you guess each action.
  • Watch a video of a folk dance from your region together and talk about the costumes and music.
  • Do slow breathing with arm raises before any dance.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Using words instead of the body to tell the story: the dance should speak without words.
  • Forgetting the tiny parts (eyes, eyebrows, fingers) that show feelings.
  • Holding the breath while moving: breathe in and out calmly.
  • Thinking all folk dances are the same: they differ from region to region.

    • ✓Folk dances are traditional, community-based dances performed at festivals and differ from region to region.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Begin with breathing and arm-raising in a four-beat count.
    • →Call out body parts and let children move only that part.
    • →Let children guess each other's routine actions to reinforce expression.
    • →Suggest regional songs and let groups dance in coordination.
    • →Ask children to share folk dances seen at festivals and describe the clothes and music.
    • →Use the book's reflection questions after the routine-story dance.
