Chapter 10: Celebratory Notes

Introduction

Chapter 10, Celebratory Notes, brings together songs sung at festivals and special times by different communities in India. Children learn songs for Diwali, the New Year, Christmas and Eid, a prayer to Lord Buddha, a patriotic song and the prayer song Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena. Each song carries a message of joy, unity and good values.

What's in this Chapter

  • *Activity 1 – Jagmag Aayi Diwali* (Hindi): "Jagmag jagmag aayi diwali, khushiyaan dher laayi diwali." The song describes Diwali, the festival of lights celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya**. People wear new clothes and light their homes with diyas, and there is joy everywhere.
  • Activity 2 – A New Year song in Sanskrit: Kshanam Prati Kshanam…, by Swami Tejomayananda. Meaning: that which is ever new and fresh is good, real and beautiful. May the New Year bring goodness, happiness and success.
  • *Activity 3 – Jingle Bells:* a Christmas song by James Lord Pierpont. Fun Fact: groups singing Christmas songs, or carols, together is called carolling.
  • *Activity 4 – Aao Eid Manaye:* celebrating Eid with unity and love. It is about decorating homes, letting go of hate, wearing beautiful clothes, enjoying the festival with family and friends, and seeking blessings from the Almighty and elders.
  • Activity 5 – A prayer to Lord Buddha: Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami, Dhammam Sharanam Gachchhami, Sangham Sharanam Gachchhami. The worshipper takes refuge in Lord Buddha and the Dharma.
  • *Activity 6 – A patriotic song, Hind Desh Ke Niwasi:*
  • - By Pt. Vinay Chandra Maudgalya.

    - "Hind desh ke niwasi sabhi jan ek hain, rang roop vesh bhasha chahe anek hain": all the people of India are one, though their colours, looks, dress and languages are many.

    - Flowers in one garland and rivers meeting the sea show this unity.

    - Its taala is keherva (dha ge na ti na ka dhi na).

  • *Activity 7 – Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena:*
  • - Lyricist Gulzar, composer Vasant Desai.

    - It asks for the strength to conquer ourselves before others, cleanse our hearts of discrimination, forgive friends' mistakes, stay truthful, and stay confident and unafraid of evil.
