Chapter 18: Look Around
Introduction
Chapter 18, Look Around, is Act 4 of the Theatre unit. Vidushaka explains observation: "the act of closely watching or noticing something, to gather information or learn more about it." It is different from seeing. You see many people on the way to school, but you observe one person to notice their actions and behaviour. An actor learns a lot by looking around, so this act finds creativity and inspiration in the world around us.
You will learn: clarity in thought, creativity, confidence in speech, storytelling, questioning, observation, and local theatre traditions.
What's in this Chapter
Scene 7 – Crafting Narratives
- Observe someone around you, such as a neighbourhood shopkeeper, a milkman, or your parents cooking.
- Notice their style of walking and talking, the props they use, their clothes and any unique action. Take 2–3 days and make notes.
- Basic: describe the person, then tell a story (it can be imaginary) with them as the main character.
- Advanced: act as that person with their emotions, actions, gestures and voice.
- Look carefully at a picture the teacher shows and tell a story from it, using actions and expressions.
- Basic: a picture of one object or animal (a tree, pot or cat).
- Advanced: connect two pictures into a new story, e.g. the story of a cat with the fish.
- Vidushaka's tip: carry a book to note ideas whenever you see an interesting person, thing or situation. It could become your next script!
Scene 8 – Community Creativity
- Maach – Madhya Pradesh
- Bhand Pather – Kashmir (the book prints "Bandh Pather")
- Ankiya Naat – Assam
- Bhavai – Gujarat
- Bayalata – Karnataka
- Jaatra – West Bengal
