Chapter 6: Imagine
Introduction
Imagination is a very powerful tool. If you can imagine in great detail, it is like having a superpower: you can come up with new ideas, tell new stories and even solve problems. This chapter shows how imagination works in theatre, both alone and in a team.
What's in this Chapter
The story of young Arjun. About 500 years ago, in Chitrapur, a grand play about the Mahabharata war was being performed. Just before Arjuna's entry, the actor stumbled backstage and tore his shiny costume. Everyone was tense. A young boy named Arjun, who was helping backstage, closed his eyes and said he could see a new costume clearly in his mind, like those sages wore in forests. He gathered large leaves, bark and vines, tied the leaves together, made a belt and armlets from vines, and used turmeric powder and ash as war paint. The actor went on stage and the audience clapped in awe. Young Arjun became a hero for his quick imagination and problem-solving.
Scene 2: Individual skills in a group. Two lessons come from the story: good imagination helps, and unique skills in a team can make a difference. Everyone cannot do the same thing, so each member contributes what they are good at.
Activity 6.1: Panchatantra exercise. In groups of five, each child takes an animal and lists its special qualities. The team then plans a new solution to the lion problem, different from the hare's trick, using each animal's skills.
Activity 6.2: Object improvisation, group version. First recall last year's game: the teacher picks an object and each child uses it as something else, with no repeats allowed. A water bottle might become a mic, a trophy or a phone. Then the game grows. One child starts an action with the object, and the teacher sends a second child, then a third. Together they spontaneously build a scene about the imaginary object. The key skills are imagination and observation. Actions must be clear, or the scene will not make sense.
Two ways of imagination in theatre:
Activity 6.3: Group scene building. Teams of four or five get five minutes to plan a story on an object (basic) or a broad theme such as fear, anger, nature, school or travel (advanced). They visualise what is on stage at the start, when and from where actors enter, where they speak, and how the scene ends and actors exit. Other teams watch and give feedback on focus on the theme, confident entries and exits, clarity, creative use of props and everyone's participation.

Common Mistakes
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Imagination is like a superpower that helps create stories and solve problems, as young Arjun did.
- ✓In a team, each member contributes unique skills rather than everyone doing the same thing.
- ✓Object improvisation builds scenes spontaneously by giving an everyday object new meanings.
- ✓Visualisation is creating detailed pictures or scenes in the mind without having seen them before.
- ✓Planning a scene means visualising the stage, entries, conversations and exits.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Tell the Arjun costume story dramatically and ask children what they would have done.
- →Use a water bottle as the first improvisation object, as in the book.
- →Add children one by one to a scene; do not assign roles or lines.
- →Give each team five minutes to plan in Activity 6.3.
- →Use the book's feedback points (could not understand, can be better, very nice) after each performance.
- →Try both an object and a theme to show how stories change.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the child bring their own skill to a group task?
- Does the child observe others' actions and visualise their own role?
- Does the child build the scene together rather than pushing only their own ideas?
- Can the child give feedback on others' performances using the given points?
- Does the child understand role and space in relation to an object?
