Chapter 7: Let's Create
Introduction
Have you ever walked like an old person with a walking stick, or copied the way an animal jumps or sniffs? It is fun to behave like someone else, and in theatre this is an important technique called imitation. The book explains that actors observe and copy the actions, voices or facial expressions of others to create believable characters. This needs careful study of real people, animals or even objects.
What's in this Chapter
Activity 7.1: Mirror exercise. There are no real mirrors; children become the mirrors! In pairs facing each other, one is the "human" and one is the "mirror". The mirror copies everything the human does, and after a while they swap roles. There is one rule: you cannot touch each other, and you stay one arm's distance apart.
Some "mirrors" raise their right hand when the human raises their right hand. A real mirror does the opposite: your left is the mirror's right. This idea is called symmetry, when both sides look the same about a line drawn in the middle. The game also teaches the importance of observation. In theatre, imitation is not just copying; it is turning observation into performance with a personal creative touch.
Panchatantra exercise: one child is the real lion and one is the reflection in the well. The hare can stand beside them, and the whole conversation happens through the reflection.
Activity 7.2: Role-play with new challenges. Role-play means taking on a character, understanding the situation, imagining the possibilities and performing. It is used to tell stories, and also to learn by doing and to solve problems. Last year, children played pairs such as police and thief or king and minister, and some tried Tenali Rama stories.
In the Panchatantra version, a deer and a monkey try to solve the lion problem. The audience might ask, "What if it was a crocodile instead of a lion?" On "switch", the deer becomes the monkey.
