Chapter 1: Arrangements of Objects
Introduction
Bansuri is the Class 4 Arts book. It opens with a story that joins together all four art forms in the book: visual arts, theatre, music and dance. The story is The Hare and the Lion from the Panchatantra. After the story, the Visual Arts section begins with Chapter 1, Arrangements of Objects. Here children look closely at everyday things, arrange them in interesting ways and draw them.
What's in this Chapter
The Panchatantra story. The book explains that the Panchatantra is a set of stories written in Sanskrit more than two thousand years ago by the scholar Vishnu Sharma. Pancha means five and Tantra means codes or principles, so the stories are grouped into five parts. They have been translated into all Indian languages and many foreign ones, such as English, German, Arabic and Japanese.
In the story, a fierce lion called Bhasuraka kills more animals than he can eat. The frightened animals promise to send him one animal every day. When it is the hare's turn, he walks slowly and arrives late. He tells the lion that "a stronger lion" stopped him on the way. The angry lion wants to see this rival, so the hare takes him to a well. Bhasuraka sees his own reflection, hears his own roar echo back, attacks, and falls to his death. The hare outwitted the lion and saved the forest. A small symbol in the book reminds children whenever an activity uses this story.
Arranging objects. The chapter says a room or shop looks better when furniture and objects are placed artistically, and that fabric in the background catches our attention. While drawing, children observe the space around objects and compare sizes, shapes, forms and colours.

- →Set up a still-life of stationery or vessels on a table and let groups rearrange it before drawing.
- →Show the Nandalal Bose paintings and let children point to each instrument before revealing the answers.
- →Model the six hide-and-seek steps on the board before children try them.
- →Take a short market walk so children see how vendors arrange and display goods.
- →Collect shoe boxes, matchboxes and fabric scraps a week in advance for the diorama.
- →Keep each child's drawings in a portfolio to track progress, as the book recommends.
