Chapter 3: Aqua World
Introduction
Aqua is another word for water. The word aquarium starts with it, and aqua is also used for shades of colour such as aqua blue and aqua green. In this chapter children "put on their art goggles" and dive into the water world. They observe patterns while drawing, colouring and creating aquatic creatures. They twist lines into animal shapes, draw Kolams and build a hanging artwork that moves, called a mobile.
What's in this Chapter
Water patterns. Children think about how they feel beside an ocean, river, pond or lake, and what lines droplets, ripples and waves make.
Shells and scales. Children draw three or more water animals and add their patterns. Then they compare these, finding what is similar and different.
Reflections. In a mirror, your reflection looks just like you. The picture shows an animal reflected in water, and children draw it by mirroring its reflection. They also draw the Panchatantra scene of the lion peeping into the well and add his reflection.
Underwater professionals. Imagine the water world with jobs: a teacher crab, a doctor fish, a chef tortoise, a crocodile actor, an octopus fashion model, a lawyer shark. Children invent and draw their own.
Kolams. In Tamil Nadu, floor designs are called Kolam. They are drawn with stone powder, rice flour or chalk. Children practise a fish Kolam made of dots and lines, and a snake Kolam with overlapping lines. They also create Kolams with coloured threads or rope, and then draw them on the floor.
Mobiles. A mobile has nothing to do with a mobile phone! It is a decorative hanging object that moves. Children hang animal forms, such as origami turtles from Chapter 4 of The World Around Us, fish and frogs, to make their own mobile.
