Chapter 2: Textures in Nature
Introduction
Many stories from the Panchatantra, the Hitopadesha and the Jataka tales are set in jungles. Nature is full of shapes, forms, colours, patterns and textures. The book explains that textures can be felt through touch: rough, smooth, bumpy, soft and everything in between. In this chapter children step outside to explore the textures of nature. They then build their own Kalpavriksha, a wish-fulfilling tree, using three techniques.
What's in this Chapter
The three techniques are:
The "Do You Know?" box explains that ancient texts mention the Kalpavriksha as a tree that grants wishes. The book also reminds children that real trees give us oxygen to breathe, fruits, shade and much more.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Texture is the feel of a surface, such as rough, smooth, bumpy or soft, and nature is full of textures.
- ✓Frottage captures a texture by rubbing a crayon or pencil on paper placed over a surface.
- ✓Collage is made by arranging and pasting different materials, including frottage pieces, on a surface.
- ✓Leaf printing uses a creamy paint paste on a leaf, pressed hard on paper to show its shape and veins.
- ✓Ancient texts describe the Kalpavriksha as a wish-granting tree, which children imagine and create.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Begin with a nature touch-walk and build a word wall of texture words.
- →Demonstrate frottage on a coin or leaf so children see the texture appear.
- →Encourage two or three preparatory sketches before the final tree outline.
- →Organise groups of four or five for the collage and leaf-printing stages.
- →Keep wet wipes and old newspapers ready; leaf printing is messy but joyful.
- →Link the leaf lines to Chapter 4 of The World Around Us, as the book suggests.
- →End with a 'wish ceremony' where children add wishes to the finished tree.
📋 Assessment Questions
