Chapter 18: Dances Around Me
Introduction
Dances Around Me is the last chapter of Bansuri. It celebrates the fact that every region of our country has its own culture and traditions, and also its own music and dance. Children connect local dances with nature, find out about their own regional dance, and bring together all the dance skills they learnt during the year.
What's in this Chapter
Dances from around India. The book shows pictures of four regional dances:
These pictures show how varied India's dance traditions are. Children look at the costumes and postures and discuss what they notice.
Activity 18.1: My dance and nature. The book says many local dances are connected to nature. It links back to the music class:
Children choose a nature song and dance to its rhythm. They put together all the steps they have learnt:
The teacher's note asks teachers to explain the meaning of the nature song, using the songs from music class and the QR code.
Activity 18.2: Learning my regional dance. Children find out about the dance style, traditional music and other art forms of their own region. What kind of music goes with the dance? Are there paintings or images of the local dance nearby? Then they choose one dance of their region and perform it. The book suggests taking students to watch a traditional dance performance and discussing the different elements and their feelings about it.
Summative dance assessment. Individually, show one step using different parts of the feet, and show an emotion related to an animal or nature using hand gestures. In a group, show animal movements in formations and perform a group dance step.
