Chapter 17: Emotion and Expression in Dance

Introduction

"What we feel, we express, and that is called expressing emotion." This short chapter helps children notice, name and show feelings through dance. It begins with a simple observation task: watch your friends through the day. How many expressions can you notice, and can you tell the feelings behind them? The book quotes a famous phrase, "Face is the index of your mind." What is in your mind shows up on your face.

What's in this Chapter

Activity 17.1: Emotions. We meet many situations each day that make us feel different emotions. Children name emotions they felt today and remember how their face and body showed them. The book uses emojis for anger, sadness, happiness and fearfulness. Then children create these expressions with dance, putting together the footsteps, arm movements and hastas learnt earlier.

Situations and emotions. Children draw an emoji to show how they would feel in each situation:

  • when your parents give you a surprise gift
  • when someone is beating an animal
  • when you see a rainbow
  • when you see squirrels chasing each other
  • when you are sick and unable to play with your friends
  • when there is a storm
  • The book leaves the answers to each child, because feelings are personal. The activity asks children to think about how a situation makes them feel and how that feeling might look.

Activity 17.2: Animal emotions. Children discuss the feelings of the animals in the Panchatantra story. For example, the animals fear the lion, the lion is angry when the hare is late, the hare is brave, and all the animals rejoice at the end. Each child uses expressions and hand gestures to show one emotion of any animal, and friends guess which emotion it is.

Assessment focus. The assessment table looks at whether the child notices emotions and shows empathy, links emotions with animals and nature, and expresses different emotions confidently. (The assessment heading in the book is printed as "Dance Expressions in Your Life".)
