Chapter 11: Songs and Stories

Introduction

Hindustani classical, Baul gaan, Bollywood songs, hip hop: different kinds of music sound different because of their style, patterns, origin, instruments and purpose. A music genre is a category that groups music by shared characteristics, sounds or patterns. This chapter explores genres and shows how songs tell stories, express feelings, celebrate festivals and bring a nation together.

What's in this Chapter

Four major categories of music:

  • Folk music (lok sangeet)
  • Classical music: Hindustani and Carnatic
  • Other traditional forms: devotional music, Rabindra Sangeet, semi-classical and more
  • Popular or creative music: film songs, pop songs and more
  • Activity 11.1: Identify the genre. Children listen online to four samples and name their genre:

  • Raga Bhupali by Hariprasad Chaurasia
  • Ye Dosti Hum Nahin Todenge
  • Rabindra Sangeet by Kanika Bandyopadhyay
  • Kesariya Balam by Manganiyar musicians
  • Why music? Music tells stories, makes us feel emotions and celebrates traditions. Many cultures have special songs for festivals and times of the year. The "Do You Know?" box says the harvest festival is celebrated all over India under many names.

Activity 11.2: Harvest songs. Children learn a Punjabi Baisakhi song: "Aayi Vaisakhi, Aayi Vaisakhi, Challo paiye bhangra…". It describes the harvest being done and everyone dancing bhangra together. They then find a harvest song from another region, write its words and compare the two.

Musical styles: a lullaby and a patriotic song.

  • *Activity 11.3: Lullaby, Ennamma Thozhi.* A traditional Tamil folk song: "Ennamma thozhi bommaya kaanum…".
  • Activity 11.4: Patriotic songs. Nanha Munna Rahi Hoon (composer Naushad, lyricist Shakeel Badayuni) and Aao Bachchon Tumhe Dikhayen (composer Hemant Kumar, lyricist Kavi Pradeep). Children also find and share a patriotic song in their own language.
  • Activity 11.5: Songs for unity. Music has played an important role in nation-building. During India's freedom struggle, songs brought people together for a common cause. *Vande Mataram, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, glorifies Bharat Mata. It inspired freedom fighters and still unites us. Jana Gana Mana* is the National Anthem, while Vande Mataram is the National Song. It is commonly sung in Raga Des but has many versions, and it is one of the most widely recorded songs in history. Children learn to sing it in a group: "Vande Mataram, Sujalam Suphalam Malayaja sheetalam, Sasya Shyamalam mataram…".
