Chapter 9: Utsav
Introduction
"Utsav" means festival. This chapter uses the colours and decorations of Indian festivals to teach patterns. The book begins with the harvest festivals of Uttarayan – Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bihu and Lohri – which, according to the Indian calendar, mark the change from winter towards summer, the return of sunny days and the start of the harvest season. The festival picture is full of shapes and repeating designs that children can spot, talk about and continue.
