Chapter 10: How do I Spend my Day?

Introduction

This chapter is about time in a child's everyday life. Pihu, who is 6 years old, shares her daily routine from morning to night. Children learn the parts of the day – morning, afternoon, evening and night – by looking at the sun and moon, compare which activities take longer, and learn about the four seasons.

What's in this Chapter

  • Pihu's day:
  • - Morning – "Look, the sun is rising in the sky. It is morning." Pihu gets up, has a glass of warm water, does yoga or exercise, brushes her teeth, bathes, eats breakfast and gets ready for school.

    - At school she studies and plays with classmates.

    - Afternoon – "The sun is high in the sky." She washes her hands and has lunch with friends, then comes home and rests.

    - Evening – "See, the sun is setting." She plays with friends and then studies.

    - Night – "The moon and the stars are visible in the sky." She eats dinner with her family, reads a story book and goes to sleep.

  • Let us Talk: What is your daily routine? When do you brush your teeth? When do you take a bath?
  • Let us Do: Tick activities you do in the morning, things you do or see during the day, and activities you do at night.
  • Guess the time of the day from a picture.
  • Colour the activity that usually takes longer time.
  • Seasons: Pictures of summer, spring, monsoon and winter. Discuss the differences, match objects with each season, and write season names under pictures.
  • Let us Talk: What do you like to eat in summer? What do you like to wear in winter?
  • Project: Draw or stick pictures of favourite foods in different seasons and the local festivals celebrated then.
  • Key Ideas

  • A day has parts: morning, afternoon, evening and night.
  • The sun's position helps us tell the time of day – rising (morning), high (afternoon), setting (evening); the moon and stars appear at night.
  • A daily routine is the order in which we do things every day.
  • Some activities take a longer time than others (sleeping at night takes longer than brushing teeth).
  • A year has seasons – summer, monsoon, winter and spring – and our food and clothes change with them.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Share your own routine and compare it with Pihu's.
  • Sort pictures into morning, day and night activities.
  • Colour the longer activity in each pair.
  • Match objects (umbrella, woollens, fan, flowers) with the right season.
  • Words to Learn

  • morning – early part of the day (सुबह)
  • afternoon – middle of the day (दोपहर)
  • evening – when the sun sets (शाम)
  • night – when it is dark (रात)
  • routine – what we do every day in order (दिनचर्या)
  • season – a part of the year with its own weather (ऋतु / मौसम)
  • summer, winter – hot season, cold season (गर्मी, सर्दी)
  • monsoon, spring – rainy season, season of flowers (वर्षा, वसंत)
  • longer – taking more time (अधिक समय)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Make a picture chart of the child's routine and stick it on the wall.
  • At different times, ask "Is it morning, afternoon, evening or night? How do you know?"
  • Compare two activities: "Which took longer – eating lunch or tying your shoes?"
  • Talk about seasonal fruits and clothes as they change through the year.
  • Encourage healthy habits from Pihu's day: exercise, washing hands, bathing and reading before bed.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Mixing up evening and afternoon – use the sun's position as a clue.
  • Thinking the order of routine activities does not matter (we brush before breakfast).
  • Confusing monsoon with winter because both can feel cool.
