Chapter 11: How Many Times?
Introduction
"How Many Times?" gives children their first taste of multiplication as repeated addition of equal groups. A group of children visits an amusement park, rides the horse swing, the toy train and the big wheel, and then eats jalebis. Each time, the same number sits together or comes on each plate, so children add the same number again and again and learn to say "6 times 3".
What's in this Chapter
- Horse swing: "2 of us can sit on the horse." Four horses: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 children.
- Toy train: "3 of us can sit in a toy train… There are 3 bogies." 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 children.
- Big wheel: "4 of us can sit together. There are 5 compartments." 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20 children.
- Jalebis: Each plate has 3 pieces and they order 6 plates. 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 18, so 6 times 3 is 18.
- Erasers: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8, so 4 times 2 = 8 erasers.
- Pencils: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15, so 5 times 3 = 15 pencils.
- Apples: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9, so 3 times 3 = 9 apples.
