Chapter 7: Lina's Family

Introduction

"Lina's Family" introduces comparing and measuring. Lina lives in a hilly village with her grandparents, parents and brother Shanbor, and her relatives come for a get-together. Children compare who is tallest and shortest, which places are nearest and farthest, which things are longest, shortest, thickest and thinnest, which are heavier or lighter, and which containers hold more water. They also measure using their own handspans, fingers and footspans.

What's in this Chapter

  • Lina's Family Get Together: Lina stands on a stool because she likes to be tall. Children find the tallest member, draw a cap on the shortest, and answer, "Who is taller than Lina's mother but shorter than Lina's father?"
  • Talk about your own family and class: Who is the tallest child in your class? How many children are taller than you?
  • Near and far: Lina's hut-shaped house is in a hilly area. Children circle whether it is nearest to or farthest from the shop and the school.
  • Amazing Facts: The Statue of Unity, a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat, is described as the tallest statue in the world.
  • Longest, shortest, thickest, thinnest: Tick the right picture; draw a stick longer than one shown and a rope shorter than another.
  • Handspan: Dadi checks the length of Chitra's sweater with her handspan. Chitra measures a stick, a table, a pencil and a notebook. "We can also use fingers for smaller objects."
  • Guess and measure: Choose handspan or fingers for a bottle, spoon, pencil, a friend's nose, leg and key. Use footspans for the distance from your seat to the classroom door.
  • Heavier and lighter: Tick and colour the heavier and lighter object. Who is heavier – you or your friend? Where is your weight usually checked?
  • Holds more, holds less: How many jugs, glasses and bowls fill a bucket? How many cups fill your water bottle and your friend's?
  • How much water do we need? A mug (not a bucket) for brushing teeth, a bucket (not a tank) for bathing, a jug for 2 glasses of lemon water, and a mug for watering a plant.
  • Project Work: Discuss why a bucket bath saves water; make short and long paper strips; list things easy or difficult to carry.
  • Key Ideas

  • We compare height with taller/tallest and shorter/shortest.
  • We compare length with longer/shorter and thickness with thicker/thinner.
  • We compare distance with near/nearest and far/farthest.
  • We compare weight with heavier and lighter.
  • We compare capacity by seeing which container holds more water.
  • Handspans, fingers and footspans are body units – different people may get different answers.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Measure your table, bag, blackboard, maths book and arm in handspans.
  • Guess first, then measure, and compare the guess with the finding.
  • Fill a bucket using jugs, glasses and bowls and count how many of each.
  • Words to Learn

  • tall / tallest – high from bottom to top (लंबा / सबसे लंबा)
  • short / shortest – not tall (छोटा / सबसे छोटा)
  • long / longer – more from end to end (लंबा / अधिक लंबा)
  • thick / thin – fat / narrow (मोटा / पतला)
  • near / far – close / distant (पास / दूर)
  • heavy / light – hard to lift / easy to lift (भारी / हल्का)
  • handspan – distance from thumb tip to little finger tip (बालिश्त)
  • footspan – length of a foot (पैर की लंबाई)
  • holds more – has more space inside (अधिक समाता है)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Line up family members by height and use taller/shorter sentences.
  • Measure the dining table with the child's handspan and with yours – why are the answers different?
  • Compare two bags by lifting them before using a scale.
  • Fill bottles using the same cup and count.
  • Discuss saving water: closing taps, reusing water and giving leftover drinking water to plants.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Comparing length without lining up the ends.
  • Thinking a bigger object is always heavier.
  • Forgetting that handspans differ from person to person.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Compare heights using tall, taller, tallest and short, shorter, shortest.
    • ✓Compare lengths and thickness of objects.
    • ✓Use near/far to describe positions of places.
    • ✓Measure lengths using handspans, fingers and footspans.
    • ✓Compare weight (heavier/lighter) and capacity (holds more/less).

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Line up children by height and ask comparison questions.
    • →Use Lina's village picture for near and far questions.
    • →Let each child measure the same table in handspans and discuss different answers.
    • →Always ask children to guess before measuring.
    • →Provide a bucket, jugs, glasses and bowls for the capacity activity.
    • →Use the water-need activity to discuss saving water.
    • →Mention the Statue of Unity while talking about 'tallest'.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the child identify the tallest and shortest in a group?
    2. Can the child say which object is longer, thicker, heavier or holds more?
    3. Can the child measure a table using handspans and report the number?
    4. Can the child choose a sensible body unit for measuring a small or big object?
    5. Can the child explain one way to save water?
