Chapter 6: Vegetable Farm

Introduction

"Vegetable Farm" extends addition and subtraction to numbers up to 20. Rumi and Shami pick vegetables from a field and add up their baskets. Children use a ginladi (bead string), hop on number strips and solve short word problems called Problem Stories. The chapter shows that there is more than one way to add, and invites children to explain their own methods.

What's in this Chapter

  • Rumi's and Shami's baskets: 7 tomatoes and 5 tomatoes altogether make 12 (7 + 5 = 12); 9 carrots and 4 carrots make 13; 8 radishes and 8 radishes make 16.
  • Beads and Mala (ginladi): To add 12 and 4, count 12 beads first, then count 4 more: "13, 14, 15, 16". So 12 + 4 = 16. Also 13 + 4 = 17, 14 + 5 = 19, 6 + 8 = 14 and 5 + 7 = 12.
  • Hop and find the sum: 8 + 5 = 13, 5 + 3 = 8, 13 + 3 = 16, 2 + 16 = 18, 4 + 12 = 16.
  • Add in your own way: Sapna has 12 coloured pencils and Gauri has 6. Sapna counts on – "12, 13… 18". Gauri breaks 12 into 10 + 2, adds 2 + 6 to get 8, then 10 + 8 = 18. Aman has 8 laddoos and Charanjeet brought 6 – 14 in all. Sheena has 12 bangles and gets 6 more – 18.
  • Picnic: Draw the things to take on a picnic and write the total number of eatables.
  • Subtraction: 15 − 9 = 6, 16 − 4 = 12, 12 − 5 = 7, 14 − 7 = 7, 16 − 6 = 10, 15 − 5 = 10, 15 − 0 = 15, 17 − 9 = 8, 13 − 3 = 10.
  • Hop and Jump: Anjali jumps 2 steps ahead from 6 and Renu jumps 7 steps back from 15 – both reach 8.
  • Add, Subtract and Match: 8 + 7 = 15 = 17 − 2; 9 + 9 = 18 = 18 − 0; 10 + 2 = 12 = 15 − 3; 16 + 1 = 17 = 18 − 1; 11 + 3 = 14 = 16 − 2.
  • Problem Stories: A potter had 9 diyas, sold 5 and made 7 more – 11 diyas. 6 children on a bus, 8 more board, 7 get down – 7 children. A bus has 18 seats and 9 children are sitting – 9 more can sit. Kuljeet had 14 toffees and was left with 6 – she shared 8. Raman had 12 bananas and was left with 5 – he ate 7.
  • Project: Plant a vegetable sapling and take care of it.
  • Key Ideas

  • We can add by counting on from the bigger number.
  • We can add by making a ten: 12 + 6 = 10 + 2 + 6 = 10 + 8 = 18.
  • Different sums and differences can give the same answer (8 + 7 and 17 − 2 are both 15).
  • Subtracting zero leaves the number unchanged (15 − 0 = 15).
  • A word problem may need adding and then subtracting.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Use a ginladi to show 13 + 4 and 14 + 5.
  • Make a number strip on the playground and find different ways to reach the same number.
  • Make your own add-and-subtract matching questions.
  • Write the total number of eatables for a picnic.
  • Words to Learn

  • ginladi – a string of beads used for counting (गिनलड़ी)
  • count on – start from a number and keep counting (आगे गिनना)
  • sum – the answer to an addition (योगफल)
  • difference – the answer to a subtraction (अंतर)
  • in all – total (कुल मिलाकर)
  • left – what remains (बचा हुआ)
  • board – get on (a bus) (चढ़ना)
  • sapling – a young plant (पौधा)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Make a simple ginladi with 20 beads, in two colours of ten each.
  • Ask children how they added and accept every correct method.
  • Turn daily events into problem stories: "We had 12 rotis and ate 5. How many are left?"
  • Draw a number strip with chalk and play Hop and Jump.
  • Let the child care for a sapling and count its leaves each week.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Counting the starting number again when counting on (12, then "12, 13…" gives the wrong total).
  • Doing only the first step in a two-step problem (the potter's diyas need − 5, then + 7).
  • Thinking 15 − 0 is 0.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Add numbers with totals up to 20 by counting on and by making a ten.
    • ✓Subtract numbers within 20 and find how many are left.
    • ✓Use a ginladi and number strip to show addition and subtraction.
    • ✓Match addition and subtraction facts that give the same answer.
    • ✓Solve simple one- and two-step word problems.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Use a real ginladi to show counting on from 12 by 4 more.
    • →Discuss Sapna's and Gauri's methods and ask children for a third way.
    • →Draw a number strip on the floor for the Hop and Jump game.
    • →Let children make their own matching sums, as the book suggests.
    • →Read problem stories aloud and let children act them out with objects.
    • →Connect the chapter to growing a vegetable sapling at school.
    • →Ask children to explain their strategies rather than just give answers.
