Chapter 13: So Many Toys
Introduction
"So Many Toys" is the last chapter of Joyful Mathematics for Class 1. It has two parts. In the first, children count and compare things in a picture – toys and colourful flowers – using more than, less than and equal to, which is the beginning of data handling. The second part is a set of puzzles that use everything learnt this year: numbers, patterns, adding, subtracting, shapes and money.
What's in this Chapter
- Hidden number cards under bowls; count logs (3 or 4?); extend Zarina's arrangement of glasses.
- A word search to find number names from one to ten.
- Fill 1 to 5 in balls so both sides have equal sums.
- Gillu likes the number 8 – ask questions whose answer is 8.
- Fill shapes (and later 4 kinds of objects) so that each occurs only once in every row and column.
- Mirror numbers: "Who am I?" with 52, 37, 25 and 93.
- Who am I? riddles: between 5 and 10 and becoming three more when read upside down (6, which becomes 9); 3 more than 8 and 3 less than 14 (11); after 50 and before 54 with digits adding to 7 (52); just before 40 (39); add 5 to get 24 (19); just after 35 (36); reduce 8 and 14 is left (22).
- Shift one matchstick of a six-stick zero to make another number.
- How many times can you subtract 5 from 25? (5 times)
- Ranu places 3 seeds on numbers in a chart so that they add to 17; with 2 seeds, find two numbers making 17.
- Find identical shadows, fill 5 to 9 so row and column totals are equal, and find the value of hidden fruits in picture sums.
- Sarita has four coins of different values – what is the fewest coins to pay exactly ₹49?
- A ball game: choose 3 balls with a sum of 15, the maximum and the minimum score.
