Chapter 10: Elephants, Tigers, and Leopards

Introduction

"Elephants, Tigers, and Leopards" is about adding and subtracting 4-digit numbers, set around India's wildlife. The chapter begins with a NIM game and an addition chart, then uses real animal numbers from different states to practise regrouping, and ends with word problems about visitors, juice bottles, vehicles and a school bank.

What's in this Chapter

NIM Game – Two players add 1 or 2 in turn; whoever reaches 10 first wins. If the other player has reached 6, you can add 1 to get 7 and then you are sure to win. If they reach 8, you add 2 and win. Children then try other targets like 11 or 12.

Addition Chart and Reverse-and-Add – Children find patterns in a 0–12 addition table. Adding a 2-digit number to its reverse (27 + 72 = 99) always gives a multiple of 11. Numbers that give 55 are 14, 23, 32 and 41. The smallest 3-digit sum is 110 (19 + 91).

How Many Animals? – India has 3/4 of the world's tigers and 3/5 of the Asiatic elephants (as the book says).

  • Elephants in Karnataka (6049) and Kerala (3054): 6049 + 3054 = 9103. The book shows regrouping: 10 ones = 1 ten, 10 tens = 1 hundred.
  • Leopards in Gujarat (1355), Karnataka (1131) and Madhya Pradesh (1817): total 4303.
  • Maharashtra has 444 tigers; Madhya Pradesh has 341 more (785); Uttarakhand has 116 more than Maharashtra (560).
  • More or Less? – Assam has 5719 elephants, 3965 more than Meghalaya, so Meghalaya has 5719 − 3965 = 1754. Leopards in Central India and the Eastern Ghats were 8820 in 2022, which was 749 more than in 2018, so 2018 had 8071.

Let Us Do – Kaziranga visitors: December 8591, November 6415 (2176 more in December); October had 1587 fewer than November, i.e. 4828. Juice factory: pineapple 1348, guava 759 more (2107), orange 1257 more than guava (3364), passion fruit 4781. Vehicles: jeeps 6304, buses 253 more (6557), tractors 5247 fewer than buses (1310), taxis 1579 more than tractors (2889).

    School Panchayat Bank – Raju, Rani and Roja deposit ₹2045, ₹3578 and ₹1240 and fill deposit slips with notes of 500, 100, 50, 10 and coins of 5, 2, 1. Raju's slip: 3 × 500 + 3 × 100 + 2 × 50 + 14 × 10 + 1 × 5 = ₹2045.

    Smart ways – 8787 − 99: subtract 100, then add 1 (8688). If 139 + 175 = 314 then 314 − 175 = 139.

    Key Ideas

  • Line up thousands, hundreds, tens and ones before adding or subtracting.
  • Regroup: 10 ones = 1 ten, 10 tens = 1 hundred, 10 hundreds = 1 thousand.
  • Estimate first (6049 + 3054 is about 9000) to check if an answer makes sense.
  • "More than" often means add; "less than" or "how many more" often means subtract.
  • Addition and subtraction are linked: one fact gives another.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Play NIM with different targets and find the winning numbers.
  • Fill number sequences like 2540, 2590 … and 7645, 7670 ….
  • Complete the India map with elephant, tiger and leopard numbers.
  • Fill a deposit slip using different combinations of notes.
  • Words to Learn

  • Regroup – exchange 10 of one place for 1 of the next (हासिल लेना/देना)
  • Estimate – approximate answer (अनुमान)
  • Sum – answer of addition (योग)
  • Difference – answer of subtraction (अंतर)
  • Endangered – at risk of dying out (संकटग्रस्त)
  • Biodiversity – variety of living things (जैव विविधता)
  • Deposit – put money in a bank (जमा करना)
  • Census – official count (जनगणना)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Use number tokens (1000, 100, 10, 1) to show regrouping.
  • Draw box diagrams for "more than / less than" problems.
  • Play NIM at home and ask, "Why did you win?"
  • Talk about wildlife sanctuaries in your own state.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to carry or borrow while regrouping.
  • Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in each column regardless of order.
  • Adding when a problem says "how many more".
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Add and subtract 4-digit numbers by lining up places and regrouping.
    • ✓Estimate before calculating to check answers.
    • ✓Understand 'more than' and 'less than' word problems using box diagrams.
    • ✓Use smart strategies (subtract 100 then add 1) and related facts.
    • ✓Find patterns in games (NIM), addition charts and reverse-and-add.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Use Dienes blocks or number tokens to model regrouping before the column method.
    • →Draw box diagrams for compare and change problems, as the Note for Teachers suggests.
    • →Play NIM in pairs and discuss winning numbers.
    • →Bring real wildlife numbers from your state for extra problems.
    • →Let children fill mock deposit slips with different note combinations.
    • →Ask children to share their own quick ways for sums like 4990 + 310.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the child add and subtract 4-digit numbers with regrouping?
    2. Can the child solve a two-step word problem (juice or vehicles)?
    3. Can the child estimate a sum or difference?
    4. Can the child explain a winning strategy in NIM?
