Chapter 4: Thousands Around Us
Introduction
Jaspreet and Gulnaz organise a langar (community lunch) at their neighbourhood Gurudwara and expect about one thousand people. Fifty-five people volunteer. Through their record of donations and visitors, children revise 2- and 3-digit numbers and then meet 1000 and bigger numbers. The book reminds us that the Indian system of writing numbers, discovered in India about 2000 years ago and now used worldwide, can write every number with just the ten symbols 0 to 9.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Ten hundreds make one thousand (1000).
- ✓4-digit numbers have Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones places.
- ✓Numbers can be written in expanded form and in words, for example 3452 = 3000 + 400 + 50 + 2.
- ✓Zero is used as a place holder, as in 7024 and 5603.
- ✓To compare or order numbers, compare the digits in the highest place first.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Open with the langar story and ask children how many people a big function might feed.
- →Build 1000 physically with 10 hundred-flats or bundles of 100 sticks.
- →Use arrow cards so children see why 4085 has 0 hundreds.
- →Discuss Ram's and Richa's mistakes to highlight the place-holder zero.
- →Let children order real data (cricket runs, mountain heights) and read them aloud.
- →Play the place value slider game: increase 1895 by 1, decrease 5648 by 10.
- →Try the 24-number challenge with 2, 3, 4, 7 in groups and discuss how they know they have all of them.
