Chapter 1: Shapes Around Us
Introduction
Diksha visits Delhi with her father and sees monuments such as India Gate, Qutub Minar, Safdarjung Tomb, Akshardham, the National Museum, Jantar Mantar and Sansad Bhawan. Back home she tries to build India Gate with wooden blocks. This chapter starts from that idea: the buildings and objects around us are made of simple 3D and 2D shapes, and we can study those shapes by building, folding, sorting and drawing them.
What's in this Chapter
Key Ideas
Activities from the Book
Block models of monuments, project work on a street model, a paper-strip sphere, making prisms and pyramids from nets, the F-V-E table, building cube towers from the Jaadui Pitara kit, drawing cubes on triangular dot paper, and making a right angle checker.

Common Mistakes
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Buildings and objects can be modelled with 3D shapes such as cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones, prisms and pyramids.
- ✓A net is the flat, opened-out form of a solid; folding it along the lines makes the solid.
- ✓Solids can be described and sorted by their faces, edges and corners (F, E, V).
- ✓Angles are formed where two lines meet; they are right, acute (less than right) or obtuse (more than right).
- ✓In a circle every diameter passes through the centre and is double the radius.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Begin with the Diksha story and ask children to name monuments they have seen, then build one with blocks or boxes.
- →Let children open real boxes to discover nets before using the nets at the end of the book.
- →Fill the F-V-E table together and ask what they notice when they calculate F + V – E.
- →Use Venn circles on the floor with chalk so children physically place solids in the right region.
- →Have every child make a right angle checker and do an 'angle hunt' in the classroom.
- →Build straw triangles and squares and push them gently to show rigidity.
- →Fold paper circles to find diameters, then measure radius and diameter with thread.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the child name a solid from a riddle about its faces, edges and corners?
- Can the child match a net to the solid it makes?
- Can the child classify angles as right, acute or obtuse using a right angle checker?
- Can the child mark the centre, a radius and a diameter on a circle and say that the diameter is double the radius?
- Can the child explain why a triangle frame is stronger than a square frame?
