Chapter 11: A Journey to the Magical Mountains

Introduction

"A Journey to the Magical Mountains" is a story about Minam, a young girl living in a small village at the foot of the mighty Himalayas, and her grandfather, who was once a Sherpa. On a special day-long walk, Minam discovers the beauty of the mountains – flowers, rivers, yaks, snow and a view of Mount Everest – and learns to respect and protect nature.

What's in this Chapter

The story.

  • Minam loves her grandfather's stories about the mountains, and they often go on long walks.
  • One sunny morning he says she has become strong enough for a special journey. Minam packs rotis with achaar, two water bottles and apples (her favourite fruit).
  • They see beautiful flowers and tall trees and hear new bird sounds. The air is fresh and cool.
  • They have lunch beside a small river with clear water, watch fish swim, and Minam dips her feet in the cool water.
  • Climbing higher, they see yaks. Grandfather explains that yaks give milk and wool and help carry heavy loads.
  • They reach snow – Minam has never seen so much! They make a small snowman.
  • From the top of a hill they see the huge Himalayan peaks. Grandfather points to Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.
  • On the way down they hear an old man playing a Santoor under a tree and see mountain goats jumping from rock to rock – good climbers that reach places hard for people.
  • Back home, Minam thanks her grandfather. He says, "The mountains are truly magical… They teach us about strength, beauty, and the wonders of nature. Always remember to respect and protect them." Minam promises to take care of the mountains.
