Chapter 12: Maheshwar

Introduction

"Maheshwar" is a conversation between two children, Aarav and Ananya, and their Chachi (paternal aunt). A newspaper picture of a fort leads Chachi to tell them about the majestic Maheshwar Fort, also called Ahilya Fort, and the wise Queen Ahilya Bai who ruled Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. The chapter builds pride in India's history and heritage.

What's in this Chapter

What Chachi tells the children:

  • The fort was built by Queen Ahilya Bai and is famous for its overhanging balconies that seem to float in the air.
  • Maheshwar is a place in Madhya Pradesh, just 95 kilometres from Indore.
  • She was a warrior queen who had a strong, beautiful fort built on the banks of the Narmada River, on a hill from where she could see her whole kingdom.
  • She belonged to the great Holkar family. She protected her people and built temples, schools and wells. She ruled with kindness and wisdom, and people loved her.
  • A 13-feet tall statue of Queen Ahilya Bai stands in front of the palace, like a guardian watching over her land.
  • The fort is known for its unique style and grand staircases, made of special red stones brought from Gujarat and Rajasthan. It overlooks the town on one side and the Narmada on the other, with beautiful temples nearby.
  • The people of Maheshwar weave the famous Maheshwari sarees of cotton and silk with unique designs.
  • The children want to visit, and Chachi promises, "One day, we shall explore it together."
  • Listening passage: Maheshwari sarees were first made of pure silk; cotton yarn was introduced later. They are famous for reversible borders and pallus, in colours like peacock blue, bright yellow, forest green and an Indian red dye called Aal. Today they are sold in India and abroad.
