Chapter 1: Together We Can

Introduction

"Together We Can" is the first chapter of Unit 1: My Land in Santoor (Class 4 English). It opens with a cheerful poem about teamwork and unity. The chapter helps children see that when people join hands, help each other and share wins and losses, they grow strong together. It also connects teamwork to our country: India has many traditions, foods, festivals and languages, yet we stand in unity.

What's in this Chapter

The poem (Let us Recite). The poem is sung by a happy team:

  • "Together we stand, strong and tall, / Helping each other, we never fall."
  • "Teamwork can overcome anything."
  • "Win or lose, we always share, / Our bond of trust is always there."
  • "With each hand joined, the goal is near, / Team spirit fills the air with cheer."
  • The message is simple: a team that helps, cheers and trusts each other never gives up, and joy comes from being together.

Bokali and Darsana (Let us Speak). Two children talk about loving their country. Darsana says that we have "different traditions, food, festivals, and languages but we still stand in unity." Children then tell a partner their name, favourite food and favourite festival.

Collective nouns (Let us Learn). A group of things has a special name. The book gives a bundle of sticks and asks children to use the words choir, pack, grove, herd, swarm, bunch, bouquet for sheep, wolves, flowers, trees, bees, boys and keys. For example: a herd of sheep, a pack of wolves, a swarm of bees, a grove of trees.

Do You Know? Honeybees do a waggle dance to tell their hive where flowers with nectar, pollen or water are. Ants also work as a team using signals to find food, defend their colony and build nests.

Prepositions of place. Using a map with a hospital, bank, post office, school, book store and children's park, children use behind, between, near, in front of to say where things are.

Let us Write. Children look at pictures of friends helping each other (Lubang helping an injured friend, Anna helping an old lady, and others) and say what they are doing and what will happen next, using will for the future.

    Key Ideas

  • Teamwork means helping each other, sharing and trusting.
  • Winning or losing, a good team stays together.
  • India is united even though we are different in many ways.
  • A collective noun names a group (a swarm of bees).
  • Prepositions tell us where something is.
  • We use "will" to talk about the future.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Recite the poem together with actions.
  • Pair talk: "Hello, I am ___. My favourite food is ___. My favourite festival is ___."
  • Fill in collective nouns by looking at pictures.
  • Map activity with behind / between / near / in front of.
  • Working Together craft: fold a paper, draw half a body, cut along the drawing and unfold to get a chain of people holding hands. Colour it and paste it.
  • Words to Learn

  • together – with each other (साथ-साथ)
  • teamwork – working as a group (मिलकर काम करना)
  • unity – being one, together (एकता)

  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Play a small team game at home (tidying a room together) and talk about how helping made it faster.
  • Point out groups around you: "Look, a bunch of bananas! A flock of birds!"
  • Ask your child to describe where things are in the kitchen using near, behind, between, in front of.
  • Talk about festivals and foods from different states to show "unity in diversity".
  • Common Mistakes

  • Saying "a herd of wolves" – wolves come in a pack.
  • Mixing up "in front of" and "behind".
  • Forgetting "will" when talking about the future ("He help her" instead of "He will help her").

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Recite the poem with hand-joining and clapping actions so children feel the idea of a team.
    • →Model the Bokali–Darsana conversation first, then let children talk in pairs, taking turns.
    • →Show real or picture groups (a bunch of flowers, a bundle of sticks) before the fill-in exercise.
    • →For prepositions, first discuss the picture in the mother tongue and then give the English words.
    • →Use classroom objects: 'The duster is near the book. The bag is behind the chair.'
    • →While doing the picture-writing task, draw attention to 'will' for future events.
    • →Let children do the paper-chain craft in pairs to practise working together.
    • →Link the honeybee waggle dance and ant colonies to the idea of teamwork in nature.
