Chapter 4: Out in the Garden

Introduction

Chapter 4 begins Unit 2: Toys and Games of Santoor. The unit opens with a busy picture of children playing in the open space in front of their houses — marbles, hopscotch, spinning tops, a blindfold game and kites — while some women work and an old man reads the newspaper. The chapter is a cheerful poem, "Out in the Garden", about playing outdoors every fine day.

What's in this Chapter

Picture reading asks children to count the children, girls, boys, women and animals; name the games; point to the boys playing with marbles, the girl playing hopscotch, the boy and girl spinning tops, the blindfolded boy and the boy holding a kite; and write names of playthings (the teacher note says in their mother tongue too).

The poem has three stanzas, each beginning "Out in the garden, / Each fine day":

  • With my ball — "I bounce my ball, / I throw my ball. / I catch my ball, / On each fine day."
  • With my kite — "I tug my kite, / I pull my kite. / I fly my kite, / On each fine day."
  • With my friends — "We run and skip, / We jump and sway. / We slide and swing, / On each fine day."
  • New words: bounce, throw, slide, sway.

    Key Ideas

  • Playing outdoors is fun and healthy — alone with a ball or kite, and together with friends.
  • The poem is full of action words: bounce, throw, catch, tug, pull, fly, run, skip, jump, sway, slide, swing.
  • Joining words with 'and': "run and skip", "jump and sway", "slide and swing". The book's examples: give and take, sing and dance, eat and drink, catch and throw, run and catch.
  • Safety matters: the book asks, "What happens if we are not careful while playing outside?"
  • Many traditional games have names in our own languages; children share what they call them.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Answer: What are the children doing with the ball? (bouncing, throwing, catching). How do they play with the kite? (tug, pull, fly). Where are they playing? (out in the garden).
  • Talk about more games and their names in the mother tongue.
  • Combine word pairs using 'and' and think of two more pairs.
  • Paper Bag Puppet: take a used paper bag with a base, fold the base upward, hold it upside down, draw the upper lip on the flap and the lower lip below it, draw and decorate the face, slide your hand in and bend your fingers to make the puppet "talk". Materials: paper bags, pencil, colour pencils or sketch pens, woollen threads and gum.
  • Words to Learn

  • garden – a place with plants and open space (बगीचा)
  • bounce – to make a ball hit the ground and jump back up (उछालना)
  • throw – to send something through the air with your hand (फेंकना)
  • catch – to hold something that is coming towards you (पकड़ना)
  • tug – to pull hard, suddenly (झटका देना)
  • skip – to hop lightly from one foot to the other (उछलते हुए चलना)
  • sway – to move gently from side to side (झूमना)
  • slide – to move smoothly down a slope (फिसलना)
  • swing – to move back and forth, as on a jhoola (झूलना)
  • hopscotch – a hopping game played on squares drawn on the ground (स्टापू / लंगड़ी)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Recite the poem outdoors and do each action with a real ball.
  • Ask children to show "tug" and "pull" with a rope or dupatta to feel the difference.
  • Make the paper bag puppet together and let the puppet recite a stanza.
  • Build a class list of local games (gilli-danda, kho-kho, pithoo) with their local names.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Mixing up "throw" and "catch" — throw sends away, catch receives.
  • Writing word pairs without 'and' ("sing dance" instead of "sing and dance").
  • Missing that each stanza ends with "On each fine day."
  • Forgetting to fold the paper bag's base upward before drawing the lips.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Recite 'Out in the Garden' and name the activities done with a ball, a kite and friends.
    • ✓Identify action words such as bounce, throw, catch, tug, skip, sway, slide and swing.
    • ✓Join two action words with 'and' (give and take, sing and dance).
    • ✓Observe a picture carefully and talk about games and playthings.
    • ✓Follow step-by-step instructions to make a paper bag puppet.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Spend time on the unit's opening picture; let children count and name games before reading the poem.
    • →Recite the poem with actions for every verb.
    • →Encourage naming games and playthings in the mother tongue alongside English (teacher note).
    • →Discuss safe play: watching for traffic, taking turns on the slide and swing.
    • →Let children invent new 'and' pairs from their own games.
    • →Do the paper bag puppet as a group craft and use the puppets for a short conversation.
