Chapter 2: Badal and Moti

Introduction

Badal and Moti is a story about a boy and his dog who become best friends. It shows how caring for an animal is returned with love and loyalty. It is part of Unit 1: Fun with Friends in Santoor.

What's in this Chapter

The story

  • Badal lives with his mother in a village. One evening, returning from school, he sees a puppy shivering in the cold.
  • He brings the puppy home and asks, "Can this puppy stay with us, Maa?" His mother says yes, "but only if you promise to take care of the puppy."
  • They name the puppy Moti. Moti grows up, loves Badal, and follows him everywhere. They eat and play together and become best friends.
  • One rainy day, on the way home from school, Badal slips on the muddy lane and falls into a deep pit. He cannot climb out.
  • His mother is worried when he doesn't come home. Moti waits at the gate. Mother gathers the neighbours to search, and Moti goes with them.
  • Moti catches Badal's scent, follows it to the pit and starts barking. The neighbours hear him and use a rope to pull Badal out.
  • Everyone is relieved. Badal hugs and thanks Moti.
  • Key Ideas

  • Kindness to animals: Badal saved Moti from the cold; later Moti saved Badal.
  • Pets need care — Badal had to promise to look after Moti.
  • Dogs have a strong sense of smell; Moti found Badal by his scent.
  • Past tense with -ed: lived, loved, played, gathered, thanked tell about actions that have already happened (walk → walked, talk → talked, ask → asked, touch → touched).
  • Word pairs: paper and pencil, bat and ball, needle and thread, lock and key, idli and sambar, chair and table.
  • Punctuation: a question ends with ? ("What is your name?"); a statement ends with . ("The sun rises in the east.").
  • Activities from the Book

  • True/False: Badal lived with his grandmother (F — his mother); Moti grew up and loved Badal (T); Mother was worried (T); Moti caught Badal's photo (F — his scent); Badal hugged Moti and thanked him (T).
  • Put story sentences in order, starting with "Badal came across a puppy by the side of the road."
  • Talk about your daily routine: before school, in school, after school.
  • Jumbled pictures and fill-in-the-blanks tell the story of a dove and an ant: the dove drops a leaf to save the ant from the stream; later the ant bites the hunter's hand and the dove flies away unhurt.
  • Complete a conversation where two children introduce themselves.
  • Words to Learn

  • shivering – shaking with cold (काँपना)
  • puppy – a baby dog (पिल्ला)
  • promise – to say you will surely do something (वादा)
  • muddy – full of wet mud (कीचड़ भरा)
  • pit – a deep hole in the ground (गड्ढा)
  • neighbours – people who live near us (पड़ोसी)
  • scent – smell (गंध)

  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Ask children to retell the story using five pictures they draw themselves.
  • Talk about pets at home or in the neighbourhood and how to care for them kindly.
  • Practise -ed words by asking, "What did you do yesterday?" (the book's note: introduce past tense informally).
  • Play a question-or-statement game: children say a sentence and the class shows "?" or "." cards.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Saying Badal lived with his grandmother — he lived with his mother.
  • Thinking Moti found Badal by seeing him — he followed Badal's scent.
  • Forgetting the question mark at the end of a question.
  • Adding "ed" to words that already show past (e.g., writing "playeded").
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Retell the story of Badal and Moti in the correct order.
    • ✓Understand that kindness and care for animals build friendship and loyalty.
    • ✓Use -ed to talk about actions that have already happened (walked, played, thanked).
    • ✓Use '?' for questions and '.' for statements.
    • ✓Match common word pairs such as lock and key, needle and thread.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Read the story aloud with expression, pausing at the rainy-day part to ask 'What will happen now?'.
    • →Let children number the story sentences in order after a second reading, as the book suggests.
    • →Discuss how Moti used his nose; ask children about animals' special senses.
    • →Recall yesterday's activities to practise -ed words naturally.
    • →Use flash cards with '?' and '.' for a quick punctuation game.
    • →Role-play the two children meeting and introducing themselves.
    • →Link the dove-and-ant story to the theme of friends helping each other.
