Chapter 6: Between Home and School

Introduction

Between Home and School is Chapter 2 of Unit 3, Going Places, in Mridang. Ravi, a Class 2 child, tells us how he and his friend walk to school through fields and groves, having fun on the way — and still reaching school on time. The chapter helps children talk about their own route to school and notice the world around them.

What's in this Chapter

The reading:

  • "Hello, I am Ravi. I study in Class 2. My friend and I go to school on foot."
  • They pass through the paddy fields, the mango grove and then reach the main road. That is the shortest route to school.
  • "What fun we have every day!" —
  • - jumping over the canals!

    - climbing the trees!

    - swinging from the branches!

    - watching garden lizards!

  • "Yet we reach school on time."
  • New words: school, paddy, fields, grove, route, canals, branches, lizards, bicycle.

    Key Ideas

  • The way from home to school is a route; Ravi takes the shortest one.
  • Walking to school can be full of fun and nature — fields, trees, canals and small animals.
  • Having fun is good, but being on time matters too.
  • Every child's route is different and worth talking about.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Let us speak: What time do you leave home? When does school start? Tell classmates about fun on your way to school.
  • 'ch' sound: point to the chart, chalk, chair; fill in 'ch' — lunch, chips, teacher, chart, chair (for example, "Today I have brought upma for lunch." "My friend Unni loves to eat banana chips.").
  • Let us draw: the route from your home to your school.
  • Let us write: circle what Ravi and his friend see — canals, mango grove, paddy fields, lizards, main road, trees (not a hospital, water park, bank, park, cars or train).
  • Name interesting things you see between home and school; ask family members about a long journey — where they went and how they travelled.
  • Jumbled letters from the lesson: home, canal, paddy, mango.
  • Let us do: make sentences with gate, road, tree, lunch, lizard; cut out vehicle pictures from old magazines to make a class chart.
  • Words to Learn

  • on foot – walking (पैदल)
  • paddy – rice plants growing in a field (धान)
  • field – open land where crops grow (खेत)
  • grove – a small group of trees (बाग़/उपवन)
  • route – the way you go from one place to another (रास्ता)
  • canal – a man-made waterway (नहर)
  • branch – part of a tree that grows from the trunk (डाल)
  • lizard – a small animal with four legs and a long tail (छिपकली)
  • shortest – least long (सबसे छोटा)
  • on time – not late (समय पर)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Walk or talk through the child's route to school and name what you pass.
  • Draw a simple map together: home, turns, landmarks, school.
  • Practise 'ch' words with real objects: chalk, chair, chart.
  • Talk about safety on the way — watch traffic, walk on the side, never jump near deep water alone.
  • Ask a grandparent about a long journey and let the child share it.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Saying Ravi goes by bus — he goes on foot.
  • Circling "water park" or "hospital" — these are not in Ravi's story.
  • Thinking the children were late because they played — the story says they reach school on time.
  • Spelling lunch as "lunh" — remember the ch at the end.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Read and retell Ravi's walk to school through paddy fields, a mango grove and the main road.
    • ✓Understand the word 'route' and describe one's own way to school.
    • ✓Identify the things Ravi sees and does on the way.
    • ✓Read and write words with the 'ch' sound (chair, chalk, chart, lunch, chips, teacher).
    • ✓Value both having fun and reaching school on time.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Start by asking children how they come to school and what time they leave home.
    • →Read the passage aloud and show pictures of paddy fields, a mango grove and a canal.
    • →Bring a chart, chalk and a chair for the 'ch' listening activity.
    • →Let children draw their own route and present it to a partner.
    • →Use the circling activity to check careful reading — only things from the story should be circled.
    • →Build a class chart of vehicle pictures that children cut out from old magazines.
