Chapter 5: Come Back Soon

Introduction

Come Back Soon opens Unit 3, Going Places, in Mridang. It is a short, bouncy poem to recite that lists many ways of travelling — by bus, train, boat, plane, taxi, car and even a rocket to the moon! The last lines carry a loving message: wherever you go, "be sure to come back soon."

What's in this Chapter

The poem:

  • "Take a bus / Or take a train, / Take a boat / Or take a plane,"
  • "Take a taxi, / Take a car, / Maybe near / Or maybe far,"
  • "Take a rocket / To the moon, / But be sure / To come back soon."
  • Sight words: take, is, the, or, two, may be.

New words: train, boat, plane, taxi, near, rocket.

    Key Ideas

  • There are many means of transport: bus, train, boat, plane, taxi, car and rocket.
  • Some journeys are near and some are far.
  • Vehicles move on land, in the air or on water.
  • The poem ends with care and love — travel, but come back soon to the people who wait for you.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Let us speak: Have you travelled by bus or train? Where did you go? What did you eat on the way? What did you see from the window? Who went with you? Did you have fun?
  • Let us listen: the teacher reads an action poem — "Everybody stop, / Everybody stand, / Everybody sit, / and raise your hand. / Everybody jump, / Everybody run, / Everybody stop, / Oh! What fun." Children follow the actions.
  • Let us draw: the vehicle you like the most — real or imaginary, with wheels or wings.
  • Let us write — make a list: sort vehicles by where they move:
  • - Land: bus, car, train, jeep, bicycle, truck, cart, taxi, tractor

    - Air: aeroplane, helicopter

    - Water: ship, boat, yacht, raft

  • Vowel sound 'u': an umbrella; a truck, a duck; a jug, a mug, a cup; a bus, a rug, a hut. Notice an before umbrella.
  • Words to Learn

  • bus – a big vehicle that carries many people (बस)
  • train – runs on rails (रेलगाड़ी)
  • boat – travels on water (नाव)
  • plane – flies in the air (हवाई जहाज़)
  • taxi – a car you pay to ride in (टैक्सी)
  • rocket – goes into space (रॉकेट)
  • near – not far (पास)
  • far – a long way away (दूर)
  • raft – a flat floating platform, often made of logs (बेड़ा)
  • yacht – a boat with sails (पाल वाली नाव)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Recite the poem with hand actions for each vehicle (steering a bus, wings for a plane, a rocket blasting off).
  • Share a real journey the family took: where, how, what you saw from the window.
  • Make three columns — Land, Air, Water — and let children sort toy vehicles or picture cards.
  • Play the "Everybody stop, everybody stand…" game as a class warm-up.
  • Accept every idea in the drawing activity; an imaginary vehicle is welcome.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Putting the helicopter under land — it moves in the air.
  • Putting the raft or yacht under land — they move on water.
  • Forgetting the last line: the poem asks us to come back soon, not to stay away.
  • Writing a umbrella instead of an umbrella.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Recite 'Come Back Soon' and name the vehicles it mentions.
    • ✓Understand 'near' and 'far' and that journeys can be short or long.
    • ✓Sort means of transport into land, air and water.
    • ✓Talk about a journey in simple English: where, how, with whom and what was seen.
    • ✓Read short 'u' words and use 'an' before 'umbrella'.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Recite the poem with actions for each vehicle; end with a big smile on 'come back soon'.
    • →Ask the book's questions about journeys and let children share their own experiences.
    • →Use the 'Everybody stop, everybody stand' poem as a listening-and-doing game.
    • →Describe unfamiliar vehicles such as a yacht, raft or cart before the sorting activity.
    • →Encourage imaginative vehicles in the drawing — they may have wheels or wings.
    • →Practise the short 'u' words and point out 'an umbrella'.
