Chapter 3: It is Fun

Introduction

It is Fun opens Unit 2, Welcome to My World, in Mridang. It is a lively poem to recite in which a child imagines moving like different animals and birds — leaping, climbing, hopping, swimming, trotting and flying. The poem helps children learn action words and enjoy acting them out.

What's in this Chapter

The poem:

  • "It's fun to be this, / It's fun to be that,"
  • "To leap like a lamb, / To climb like a cat."
  • "To hop like a frog, / To swim like a fish,"
  • "To trot like a horse, / To fly like a bird."
  • "I can act / Just like them all, / It's fun to be this, / It's fun to be that."
  • Sight words: this, that, like, to, them, all, none.

New words: fun, climb, leap, swim, trot, fly.

    Key Ideas

  • Every animal has its own special way of moving: the lamb leaps, the cat climbs, the frog hops, the fish swims, the horse trots and the bird flies.
  • We can use the pattern "to ___ like a ___" to describe how something moves.
  • Pretending to be animals is fun and helps us understand them.
  • The word I is special: the book's Song of I says "I is both a letter and a word… You use I and not your name."
  • Activities from the Book

  • Let us speak: listen to animal sounds on a mobile (a frog croaking, a hen cackling, a duck quacking, a sheep bleating) and guess the animal.
  • Imagine: "If you were a cat, what would you do?" — "I would run after a mouse / drink milk / say 'meow'." "If you meet an elephant, what would you say?"
  • Make sentences with climb, leap, swim, trot and fly (for example, "Monkeys climb trees.").
  • Let us write: "I can ___ like a ___"; name two animals or birds (other than fish) that can swim; name two animals that live on trees.
  • Picture reading: talk and write about a picture.
  • Let us think — match animals to actions: The horse trots. The lamb leaps. The snake crawls. The squirrel runs. The monkey swings.
  • Vowel sound 'i': an inch, an inkpot, an igloo; a pin, a list, a fish; a bin, a ring, a ship.
  • Let us draw: follow the steps to draw and colour a rangoli.
  • Words to Learn

  • fun – something that makes us happy (मज़ा)
  • leap – to jump high or far (छलाँग लगाना)
  • climb – to go up (चढ़ना)
  • hop – to make small jumps (फुदकना)
  • swim – to move in water (तैरना)
  • trot – a horse's quick walk (घोड़े की दुलकी चाल)
  • fly – to move in the air (उड़ना)
  • crawl – to move close to the ground (रेंगना)
  • swing – to move back and forth, hanging (झूलना)
  • act – to pretend to be someone (अभिनय करना)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Recite the poem and let children act out each line: leap, climb, hop, swim, trot and fly.
  • Play "Animal Actions": call out an animal and children show how it moves.
  • Play animal sounds and ask children to name the animal.
  • Ask everyone the "If you were a cat…" question so every child gets a turn.
  • Sing the Song of I with claps.
  • Draw a simple rangoli together step by step.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Mixing up the pairs: it is "leap like a lamb" and "climb like a cat", not the other way round.
  • Thinking "trot" means running like a dog — in the poem, the horse trots.
  • Naming a fish when the book asks for animals or birds other than fish that can swim — name others, such as a duck or a frog.
  • Writing a igloo instead of an igloo.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Recite 'It is Fun' with actions and rhythm.
    • ✓Match animals to how they move: lamb–leap, cat–climb, frog–hop, fish–swim, horse–trot, bird–fly.
    • ✓Use the pattern 'I can ___ like a ___' to speak and write sentences.
    • ✓Learn more action words from the book: crawl (snake), run (squirrel), swing (monkey).
    • ✓Read short 'i' words and use 'an' before inch, inkpot and igloo.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Recite the poem with a matching action for each animal; invite children to join.
    • →Play recorded animal sounds (frog, hen, duck, sheep) and let children guess the animal.
    • →Create imaginary situations — 'If you were a cat…' — and make sure every child gets a turn.
    • →Write climb, leap, swim, trot and fly on the board; children make sentences like 'Monkeys climb trees.'
    • →Use the matching activity to add crawl, run and swing to the list of action words.
    • →Sing the Song of I with claps and explain that 'I' means oneself.
    • →Do the rangoli activity step by step to build fine-motor skills.
