Chapter 12: Little Drops of Water

Introduction

Little Drops of Water opens Unit 5, Harmony, in Mridang. It is a short poem to sing. It says that tiny things — drops of water and grains of sand — together make the mighty ocean and the pleasant land. In the same way, little words of love and small acts of kindness spread smiles and happiness.

What's in this Chapter

The poem:

  • "Little drops of water, / Little grains of sand, / Make the mighty ocean / And the pleasant land."
  • "Little words of love, / Little acts of kindness, / Little deeds of warmth / Spread smiles and happiness."
  • New words (as listed): mighty, pleasant, kindness, peaceful, ocean.

    Key Ideas

  • Small things add up to make big things: drops make the ocean, grains make the land.
  • Small kind acts — a kind word, helping someone — make people happy.
  • We use water in many ways every day, so we should value it.
  • Words for amounts: we say drops of for liquids (water, milk, juice, oil) and use words like a cup of, a slice of, a tube of.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Let us speak: say all the words that come to mind when you think of 'water'; discuss how we use water; look at pictures of day and night and describe them ("Can you see colours at night?").
  • Let us listen: follow directions to colour — colour the birds, the leaves, the plant.
  • Let us draw: one thing that would help make our earth a more beautiful place.
  • Let us write:
  • - Match phrases from the poem: grains of sand, drops of water, words of love, deeds of kindness. (Note: the poem itself says acts of kindness and deeds of warmth, so the last pair in the exercise does not exactly match the poem.)

    - Circle words that go with 'drops of': juice, water, milk, oil (not bread, carrot, cotton, salt or rice).

    - Fill in: a cup of milk, a slice of bread, a tube of toothpaste, a box of pencils, a bag of clothes.

    - Rearrange words into sentences with a capital letter and full stop — "Raghav took his book."

  • Project work: touch and feel banana, salt, oil, flour, sugar, rice and wheat at home; bring something grainy to class.
  • Words to Learn

  • drop – a tiny bit of liquid (बूँद)
  • grain – a tiny piece of sand, rice or wheat (दाना/कण)
  • sand – tiny grains found on beaches and deserts (रेत)
  • mighty – very big and strong (विशाल)
  • ocean – a very large sea (महासागर)
  • pleasant – nice (सुहावना)
  • kindness – being good and helpful to others (दया)
  • deed – something that you do (कार्य)
  • warmth – friendliness and care (स्नेह)
  • happiness – the feeling of being happy (खुशी)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Sing the poem together with a simple tune and actions (drops falling, spreading arms for the ocean).
  • Do a "small kindness" chart: each child adds one kind act they did.
  • Show that drops add up — fill a cup using a dropper or spoon.
  • At home, let children touch rice, salt, sugar and flour to feel what "grainy" means.
  • Practise "a cup of…", "a slice of…" during meals.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Circling bread or rice for 'drops of' — only liquids come in drops.
  • Saying "a slice of milk" — it is a cup of milk and a slice of bread.
  • Forgetting the capital letter at the start and full stop at the end when rearranging sentences.
  • Thinking only big deeds matter — the poem says little acts of kindness spread happiness.
