Chapter 11: The Smart Monkey

Introduction

The Smart Monkey is Chapter 4 of Unit 4, Life Around Us, in Mridang. Two girls, Anju and Farida, throw their empty packet and bottle on the ground, but a monkey shows them the right thing to do by putting his banana peel into the dustbin. The girls feel ashamed and clean up. The story teaches cleanliness and not littering.

What's in this Chapter

The story:

  • One day Anju and Farida went to the market. Anju bought a bag and Farida bought a water bottle. At a shop they bought a packet of groundnuts and a bottle of juice.
  • Feeling tired, they sat on a bench under a tree. A monkey sat on a branch above them, but they did not see him.
  • They ate the groundnuts and threw the packet down. They drank the juice and threw down the bottle.
  • The monkey had a banana. He peeled it and ate it. Then he climbed down with the banana peel and threw it into a dustbin nearby.
  • Farida and Anju saw this and felt ashamed. They picked up the packet and the empty bottle and threw them into the dustbin.
  • Sight words: then, down, on, and, with, in, them, under, nearby.

New words (as listed): shopping, groundnuts, branch, peel, dustbin, threw, empty.

The teacher's note adds that groundnuts are also called peanuts.

    Key Ideas

  • Throwing waste on the ground is littering; it makes places dirty.
  • Waste belongs in the dustbin.
  • We can learn good habits from anyone — even a monkey!
  • Feeling ashamed of a mistake and correcting it is the right thing to do.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Let us speak: Have you seen people throwing packets or bottles in the park or on the road? What do you do with a biscuit wrapper? Is there a dustbin in your school, and where is it?
  • Let us draw: three things you use to clean your house.
  • Let us listen — syllables: mar-ket, mon-key, pack-et, dust-bin, class-room, An-ju, ba-na-na, Fa-ri-da. Clap your own name.
  • Let us write: tick/cross sentences (for example, "Anju and Farida went to their school" is wrong — they went to the market; "There was a bird on the branch" is wrong — it was a monkey); complete sentences; write things you do to keep home and classroom clean.
  • Project work: share an experience of going to a nearby shop with family.
  • Blends fl and cl: flag, flower, floor; cloud, clap, clock — "There is a clock in the classroom."
  • Words to Learn

  • market – a place where things are bought and sold (बाज़ार)
  • groundnuts – peanuts (मूँगफली)
  • bench – a long seat (बेंच)
  • branch – part of a tree (डाल)
  • peel – the skin of a fruit, like a banana (छिलका)
  • dustbin – a container for rubbish (कूड़ेदान)
  • threw – sent something through the air (फेंका)
  • empty – with nothing inside (खाली)
  • ashamed – feeling bad about something wrong you did (शर्मिंदा)
  • nearby – close by (पास में)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • After a snack, ask your child, "Where does the wrapper go?" and praise them for using the dustbin.
  • Walk around the school to find the dustbins.
  • Talk about keeping home, classroom, parks and roads clean.
  • Clap syllables for names in the family and class.
  • Practise fl/cl words with real things: a flag, a flower, a clock.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Saying the girls went to school — they went to the market.
  • Saying a bird sat on the branch — it was a monkey.
  • Thinking the monkey threw the peel on the ground — he threw it into the dustbin.
  • Forgetting that the girls fixed their mistake by picking up the packet and bottle.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Retell the story of Anju, Farida and the monkey in the correct order.
    • ✓Understand that waste must go into a dustbin and that littering is wrong.
    • ✓Learn that we should correct our mistakes, as Anju and Farida did.
    • ✓Break words and names into syllables by clapping.
    • ✓Read and use words with the blends 'fl' and 'cl'.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Ask children if they have seen people throw packets or bottles on the road, and discuss it.
    • →Read the story and pause after the girls throw their waste: What do you think will happen?
    • →Tell children that groundnuts are also called peanuts, as the teacher's note suggests.
    • →Take a short walk to find the school dustbins.
    • →Use the tick/cross activity to check careful reading.
    • →Encourage children to share shopping experiences in English, allowing some mother-tongue words at first.
    • →Give regular practice with the fl and cl blends.
