Chapter 1: My Bicycle
Introduction
My Bicycle opens Unit 1, Fun with Friends, of Mridang (Class 2 English). It is a short poem that children recite. A child proudly describes a red bicycle — its colours, its bell and how it moves — and ends by putting on a little helmet before riding "happily everywhere". The chapter builds speaking, listening, reading and writing skills around something every child loves: riding a bicycle.
What's in this Chapter
The poem. The child says:
Sight words to recognise at a glance: I, and, is, in, my.
New words: pedal, aside, sometimes, track, helmet, everywhere.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Recite the poem 'My Bicycle' with rhythm and actions.
- ✓Name the parts of a bicycle: seat, pedal, wheel, bell, handle, carrier and brake.
- ✓Describe things using colours, as the poem does (red bicycle, blue seat, black tyres).
- ✓Understand why we wear a helmet and why a bell helps others move aside.
- ✓Read words with the short 'a' sound and use 'an' before words that begin with 'a'.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Begin by asking children to describe a bicycle they have seen, as the book suggests.
- →Recite the poem line by line with actions; let children join in the 'Trin… trin… trin…' line.
- →Bring a real bicycle (or a large picture) to label the parts from the help box.
- →Use the helmet line to talk about safety measures such as helmets and seat belts.
- →Show a picture of a tricycle and a wheelchair; explain that elders, injured people and people with disabilities use wheelchairs, and end on the positive note that wheels help us move.
- →Play recorded bell sounds (school, bicycle, temple) and pause after each so children can guess.
- →Practise the short 'a' words aloud and point out 'an' before 'ant', 'axe' and 'apple'.
- →Give time for the 'magic bicycle' drawing and ask: Where would you go? What would you see?
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the child recite the poem and answer 'What colour is the bicycle/seat/tyres?'
- Can the child label at least five parts of a bicycle correctly?
- Can the child complete: 'The sound of the ____ makes people move aside'?
- Can the child mark 'The child needs some water to keep the bicycle moving' as incorrect and explain why?
- Does the child use 'an' correctly before ant, axe and apple?
