Chapter 9: Anandi's Rainbow

Introduction

"Anandi's Rainbow" is the last chapter of Mridang, in Unit 4, Seasons. It is a gentle, imaginative story about a girl who uses the colours of the rainbow to paint the flowers in her garden. It links the rainy season to the rainbow, encourages children to watch the sky, and ends with writing about themselves and colouring the Indian flag.

What's in this Chapter

Story – Anandi's Rainbow. It was raining. Anandi was fast asleep, dreaming of rainbows. She woke up and looked out of her window. There was a huge, bright rainbow across a clear blue sky! She ran out to the garden with Milli, her favourite cat.

Anandi loved to draw and paint. Today she wanted to paint the flowers of her garden with the colours of the rainbow:

  • one flower violet, another indigo
  • one blue
  • the leaves green
  • one orange, one red
  • She left the yellow "so that the Sun may look bright and gay". Then there were beautiful flowers all over the garden, and the Sun shone "in its yellow glory". After giving colours to the flowers and the Sun, the rainbow was gone.

Let us speak. Have you seen a rainbow? When and where? What colour is the sky at sunrise and sunset?

Let us do. Go outside and look at the sky. Do you see clouds? What shapes do you see in them? Draw them. Watch the sky at sunrise, sunset and night, and share what you saw.

Let us write. Write about yourself: My name is … I am … years old. I study in … school. My favourite colour is … I like … Then colour the Indian flag.

The book also gives the answers to the riddles from the food chapter: orange, coconut, onion and grapes. The cat mask for the cap-seller unit is printed here too.

  • Do "cloud watching": lie down and name shapes in the clouds.
  • Help the child fill in the "Write about yourself" lines, and let them draw themselves beside it.
  • Colour the Indian flag together: saffron, white and green, with the navy blue chakra.
