Chapter 8: The Four Seasons

Introduction

"The Four Seasons" opens Unit 4, Seasons. A song about spring, summer, monsoon and winter helps children understand how the weather changes through the year, and what we wear and do in each season. The chapter includes short picture-readings about Brinda in hot Hyderabad and Prithvi in cold Shimla, clothes from different regions, a paper-hat craft and two rain rhymes.

What's in this Chapter

Song – The Four Seasons.

Spring is a time, / when children play. / Flowers bloom, / every day.
Summer is hot. / To stay cool, / everyone wants a / dip in the pool.
Monsoon clouds / Are filled with rain, / Make you feel / Cool again.
Winter is cold. / On sunny days, / People enjoy the / sun's rays.

Let us speak. What do you wear in summer and in winter? Which season do you like most, and why? Tell a four-picture story in your own words.

Let us read.

  • Summer: Brinda and her family visit her grandparents in Hyderabad. It is hot, so she wears a cotton frock. What are her family members wearing?
  • Winter: Prithvi has gone to Shimla. It is cold there. What is he wearing? What do you see in the picture?
  • Monsoon: Circle the things you see in a rainy picture: pot, puddle, mud, house, roses, raindrops, cat, umbrella, boat, mat, sun.
  • Clothes we wear. Sari, dhoti-kurta, shirt, cap, frock, pants, salwar suit, t-shirt, lungi-angavastram.

Let us do – A Paper Hat. Take an A4 sheet.

  • Fold it lengthwise.
  • Fold it again.
  • Open it and bring the corners to the centre.
  • Fold one lower flap upward.
  • Do the same with the other flap on the opposite side.
  • Now the hat is ready: "Put on your hat and have fun!"

    Rhymes.

  • Pitter Patter: "I hear thunder, I hear thunder, Oh don't you? Pitter patter raindrops, I am wet through."
  • Rain: "Rain on the green grass, / Rain on the trees, / Rain on the rooftops, / And rain on me."
  • Let us write. Write words for each season, for example summer (hot, holidays), winter (cold, woollen cap), spring (new leaves, colourful) and monsoon (umbrella, clouds).

    Key Ideas

  • There are four seasons in the song: spring, summer, monsoon and winter. They come in a cycle.
  • The weather in each season decides what we wear: cotton in summer, woollens in winter, umbrellas in monsoon.
  • Different places can have different weather at the same time (hot Hyderabad, cold Shimla).
  • People in India wear many kinds of clothes.
  • Words to Learn

  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Explain the cycle of seasons with four pictures on a circle.
  • Help children answer in complete sentences, such as "In winter I wear a sweater."
  • Make the paper hat together, step by step.
  • On a rainy day, sing "Rain on the green grass" and look for puddles and clouds.
  • Sort the clothes at home into summer clothes and winter clothes.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Saying summer is cold, or mixing up summer and winter.
  • Thinking it is the same season everywhere. Shimla can be cold when Hyderabad is hot.
  • Skipping a fold when making the paper hat. Follow the steps in order.
