Chapter 6: Fun with Pictures

Introduction

"Fun with Pictures" opens Unit 3, Food. Starting from a colourful picture of fruits and vegetables, children learn food names, colours and counting. A song teaches the value of sharing, and a reading lesson takes them to a market. The chapter ends with Are these …? Yes, they are / No, they are not sentences and the message that vegetables are good for health.

What's in this Chapter

Let us speak – picture questions. What do you see? Say the names of the fruits and vegetables. How many fruits and vegetables are there? Name the fruits that are red and the green vegetables. Which do you like most? Why do we eat fruits and vegetables?

Song – Fruits for all.

Five yellow mangoes hanging on the tree, / One for the traveller who rests under the tree. / One for the bird who nests on the tree. / One for the squirrel who runs up the tree. / One for the rabbit who lives under the tree. / One for you to share with me.

The second verse is about five red apples. Questions: With whom does the tree share its fruits? What do you share with your brother, sister or friends? Circle for and on in the poem.

Let us do. Bring one fruit, wash it well, and make a fruit chaat with the teacher's help. Sit in a circle and enjoy it together.

Reading – A Visit to the Market. Mini's father is a farmer who grows vegetables and sells them in the market. Every Saturday Mini goes with him.

  • They see people buying vegetables, fruits, flowers and toys.
  • Her father names the flowers: roses, marigolds, jasmine. Mini says her mother sometimes makes a string of jasmine flowers.
  • Then the fruits: pineapples behind the apples, oranges on the right, and a big green watermelon on the left.
  • Mini goes home with a small basket of flowers; her father has a bag of fruits.
  • Sight words: his, he, them, her, around, there, those, behind, with, these.
  • Let us read / write. Read food words aloud: tomatoes, potatoes, oranges, onions, brinjals, pineapples, jackfruit, cauliflowers, mangoes, radish, guava, carrots, cabbages, peas. Write colour and food pairs: yellow mango, red apple, green guava, purple brinjal, brown potato, orange carrot, white radish.

    Fill in the blanks:

Are these onions? Yes, they are. These are onions.
Are these tomatoes? No, they are not. These are brinjals.

The chapter ends: "Vegetables are good for health. We should eat them everyday."
