Chapter 5: A Farm

Introduction

"A Farm" is the third chapter of Unit 2, Life Around Us. Through a farm song and a reading lesson, Animals and Birds, children learn the names, sounds and colours of the animals and birds around them. They also meet the idea of domestic and wild animals, and practise listening for the last sound of a word.

What's in this Chapter

Song – A Farm.

My dear grandpa had a farm / E-I-E-I-O / And on that farm, / He had a cow / E-I-E-I-O / With a moo-moo here / And a moo-moo there …

The second verse has a hen with "a cluck-cluck here and a cluck-cluck there". Children add more animals and their sounds, even using sounds from their own language, such as a cat that goes miaon-miaon.

Let us do. Colour the farm and name the animals using the help box: cat, cow, goat, pig, hen, cock, sparrow.

Reading – Animals and Birds. Jaggu lives in Nagpur and shows us the animals near his house:

  • a dog that lives near the gate
  • cats that jump up and down in the verandah
  • a cow that eats grass
  • a very small rat that the cat chases
  • monkeys that swing and jump in the trees
  • a few snakes in the field beside his house, so "you have to walk carefully"
  • Then the birds:

  • a crow, which is black
  • a pigeon, which is grey
  • a sparrow, which is a small bird
  • a parrot, which is green with a red beak
  • a peacock, which has many colours
  • "I love animals and birds."

  • The new words are verandah, cow, rat, sparrow, crow, pigeon, snake, fields, peacock and beak.
  • Let us speak.

  • Some animals live in the jungle: tiger, lion, elephant.
  • Last sounds: rat ends in 't'. What do cap, jam, pen, bell end with? (p, m, n, l)
  • Talking in pairs: "What is the colour of a parrot?" – "A parrot is green." For the peacock: "Oh! It has many colours."
  • Fun time: find the elephants in a picture and say where they are, using in, on, behind.
  • Key Ideas

  • Animals near our homes are domestic or nearby animals. Some animals live in the jungle (wild animals).
  • Each animal makes its own sound, and each bird has its own colour.
  • Words have a first sound and a last sound.
  • Position words (in, on, behind) tell where.
  • Words to Learn

  • farm – खेत
  • cow – गाय
  • hen – मुर्गी
  • goat – बकरी
  • verandah – बरामदा
  • crow – कौआ
  • pigeon – कबूतर
  • sparrow – गौरैया
  • parrot – तोता
  • peacock – मोर
  • beak – चोंच
  • jungle – जंगल
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Sing the farm song and let each child add an animal and its sound in any language.
  • Watch birds from a window together and name each bird and its colour.
  • Sort picture cards into "near my home" and "in the jungle".
  • Play "last sound" games: say cap – p, pen – n.
  • Use toys to practise in, on, behind.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Saying "A parrot is red." The parrot is green with a red beak.
  • Mixing up the first and last sound of a word.
  • Calling every bird a "sparrow". Name each bird by its look.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Name farm animals and their sounds, and add verses to the farm song.
    • ✓Name common birds and their colours: crow black, pigeon grey, parrot green with a red beak, peacock many colours.
    • ✓Tell animals near home apart from jungle animals (tiger, lion, elephant).
    • ✓Hear the last sound of words like rat, cap, jam, pen and bell.
    • ✓Use 'in', 'on' and 'behind' to say where things are.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Replace the animals in the song with their sounds, using sounds from the children's languages too.
    • →Talk about animals, birds and insects that live around the children.
    • →Repeat the English names of animals and birds often and regularly.
    • →Help children understand the idea of domestic and wild animals.
    • →Model the pair talk 'What is the colour of a parrot?' and help children frame full sentences.
    • →Use the Fun time picture to practise prepositions such as in, on and behind.
    • →Stretch the final sound when saying rat, cap and pen so children can hear it.
