Chapter 1: Exploring the Investigative World of Science
Probe and Ponder
The chapter opens with questions meant to spark curiosity, not for exams:
Introduction
In Grade 6 we learnt that science begins with wonder — simple "Why?" and "How?" questions. In Grade 7 we learnt that science is always evolving: each answer opens new questions. In Grade 8 we enter the Investigative World of Science.
"We don't want you to just learn new facts, we want you to learn how to find new facts."
Investigation means asking focused questions, designing simple experiments, and using observations to improve our understanding — becoming young scientists who explore real-world puzzles, from why does dough rise? to is the world getting warmer?
The root and the kite
The page numbers in the book carry two symbols:
Good investigation balances the solid ground of careful observation with the freedom of creative thinking.
Key Concepts: The Journey of Grade 8
The chapter previews the whole year:
Activities in the Chapter: Investigating the Puri
Aim: find out what changes the way a puri puffs up when fried.
Things we can change or control (variables):
Things we can observe or measure:
Key rule — a fair test: change only one thing at a time, keeping everything else the same. To test oil temperature (boiling hot, hot, not very hot), use dough circles of the same thickness dropped in the same way.
Conclusion: after one round of experiments new questions arise — fresh or stored dough? What if I prick a hole before frying? This is systematic investigation. Interestingly, even the puffing of a puri is not yet completely understood by scientists!

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Grade 8 science is about learning how to find new facts through investigation, not only learning facts
- ✓An investigation starts with a focused, scientific question
- ✓Identify what can be changed or controlled (variables) and what can be observed or measured
- ✓In a fair test, change only one thing at a time and keep other conditions the same
- ✓Good science balances careful observation (the root) with creative thinking (the kite)
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Open with the book's 'Probe and ponder' questions and let students add their own question on the board
- →Use the puri example: have groups list what they can control versus what they can observe in two columns
- →Discuss why changing oil temperature and dough thickness together would give a confusing result
- →Show the root and kite symbols on the book's pages and ask what each represents
- →Walk through the year's chapter journey as a concept map linking microbes, forces, particles, light, Moon and Earth
- →Set a home task: observe a phulka or puri puffing and record observations like a scientist
- →Encourage a class 'question wall' where students keep adding curious questions through the year
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student frame a focused scientific question about an everyday event?
- Can the student separate variables that can be changed from things that can be observed or measured?
- Does the student explain why only one variable should be changed at a time?
- Can the student state what the root and the kite symbols represent?
- Can the student name at least four topics they will investigate in Grade 8?
