Chapter 1: The Wonderful World of Science
Introduction
The first chapter of Curiosity welcomes you to Science in the Middle Stage. It explains what science is and gives the book its name. The most important thing a young scientist needs is curiosity, the habit of wondering and asking how and why.
Science is a way of thinking, observing and doing things to understand the world we live in and to uncover the secrets of the universe.
Key Concepts
What is Science?
Science is like a giant jigsaw puzzle
What will we explore in this book?
The chapter previews the journey ahead:
How can we find answers on our own? The Scientific Method
The chapter uses a simple story. Your pen stops writing.
The way you tried to find out why your pen stopped writing is an example of the scientific method.
Steps of the scientific method (as given in the book):
Everyone can work like a scientist
Scientists are people who follow the scientific method. But anyone who follows it is working like a scientist:
Science is done together
Science is rarely done alone. Scientists across the world work in large teams. If you cannot find an answer yourself, ask your friends. Discovering things together is more fun!
After all, to be a wise person, you must be a "whys" person!

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Science is a way of thinking, observing and doing things to understand the world; curiosity is its starting point.
- ✓Science is like a never-ending jigsaw puzzle: every discovery adds a piece and raises new questions, and pieces can be moved when new evidence appears.
- ✓The scientific method: observe → ask a question → guess an answer → test by experiment or observation → analyse the results.
- ✓Anyone who follows the scientific method (a cook, a cycle mechanic, an electrician) is working like a scientist.
- ✓Science is usually done together in teams, and it happens everywhere, from the kitchen to outer space.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with the pen-that-stopped-writing story: bring a pen with an empty refill and let students guess, test and re-guess in front of the class.
- →Make a large wall chart of the five steps of the scientific method and refer back to it in every later chapter.
- →Run a 'Why wall': each student sticks one 'Why?' question on a chart paper, then the class sorts which questions later chapters will answer.
- →Role-play the cook, the cycle mechanic and the electrician; the class identifies each step of the scientific method in each role-play.
- →Show the chapter's pictures (mountain, desert, coast, ocean, galaxy) and ask each group to write three questions about one picture.
- →Use a real jigsaw puzzle to explain how discoveries add pieces, and how a wrong piece must sometimes be moved.
- →For Activity 1.2, ask students to interview a family member about a problem they solved at home and present its steps.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student state the five steps of the scientific method in the correct order?
- Can the student identify the steps of the scientific method in a new everyday situation (for example, a torch not lighting)?
- Can the student explain why science is compared to a jigsaw puzzle?
- Can the student write a testable guess for a 'Why?' question they asked?
- Does the student understand that a wrong guess leads to a new guess rather than failure?
