Chapter 6: Happy and Healthy Living
Chapter 6: Happy and Healthy Living
Introduction
We all feel happy at different times – when we eat our favourite food or play games. This chapter shows that staying happy and healthy needs good food eaten in the right way, respect for every grain, exercise and play, enough sleep, and feeling safe.
What's in this Chapter
Journey of the Grains – A grain of rice or wheat makes a long journey from the farm to our plate. Farmers, sellers, cattle and earthworms, along with water, soil and sunlight, all help. Children tick the elements that help a grain, such as soil, farmer, earthworm, air, water and insects, and write the role of soil, water, the farmer, cattle, the shopkeeper and family members.
Thank You Everyone! – When we remember everyone who helped bring our food with love and gratitude, we feel the importance of each grain and enjoy the taste more. In India, festivals like Makar Sankranti, Akshay Tritiya, Raja Utsav, Onam and Lohri show gratitude to Mother Nature for our food.
Mindful Eating – The teacher asks students to sit in a circle, close their eyes and hold one peanut each. They put it in the mouth slowly, feel its surface with the tongue, chew it gently, notice the flavour with the tongue, nose and other senses, and remember its texture before swallowing. Mindful eating means paying attention to what we eat and how we feel while eating. Eating slowly and chewing well helps us enjoy food, make healthier choices and value our food.
Valuing Food – Every grain is precious. Wasting food means not respecting the hard work of everyone who brought it to our plate. Children keep a one-week record of whether they ate their meals fully, adding a happy or sad face.
Enjoy Sports – Playing in open fields, running, jumping, cycling and skipping keep us strong and energetic. Yoga improves posture and keeps us happy and active. The book mentions Khel Yoga, the textbook on Physical Education and Well-being, for more games and exercises.
Sleep Well too! – Our body needs enough sleep every day. Good sleep takes away tiredness and makes us feel fresh. Without it we feel tired, sleepy and irritable, and find it hard to focus. Sleep is as important as healthy eating and exercise.
Feeling Safe – A safe touch is like a comforting hug from a mother or family member that makes us happy. An unsafe touch makes us feel uneasy, scared, confused or uncomfortable, whether it is from someone we know or a stranger. If anyone makes us uncomfortable, it is okay to say "No" and tell a trusted adult like a teacher or parent. We do not have to feel guilty.
