Chapter 9: House of Hundreds - II
Introduction
House of Hundreds - II takes children's number sense up to 1000. It opens with a story: Akbar wants to know how many crows fly in his city. Birbal says, "There are exactly Nine Hundred and Sixty Three crows in our city." When Akbar asks what if there are fewer or more, Birbal says the others have gone on a holiday or crows from other places are visiting! The story shows that large numbers like 963 are part of our world, and that estimating is a useful skill.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Numbers up to 1000 can be shown with hundreds, tens and ones tiles and placed on a number line.
- ✓Every number lies between neighbouring hundreds, fifties and tens (e.g. 468: 400-500, 450-500, 460-470).
- ✓The same number can be written in many ways, such as 368 = 300 + 60 + 8 = 400 - 32.
- ✓Number patterns can grow by 10, 15, 25, 30 or 100.
- ✓Estimating large quantities, as Birbal did with the crows, is a useful mathematical skill.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Tell the Akbar-Birbal crow story and ask children to estimate large quantities around them, as the book's teacher's note suggests.
- →Show a 1000 ginladi (bead string) so children feel how large 1000 is.
- →Use Dienes blocks or drawn tiles for every new number before writing it.
- →Play Tambola with different ranges and clues to practise more than, less than and digit places.
- →Let children find different jumps for the cranes and compare 2-jump and 3-jump solutions.
- →Encourage children to use local words and languages when making word-numeral cards.
- →Ask children to explain their strategies when listing numbers made from 3 and 8.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the child draw hundreds, tens and ones tiles for a number such as 504?
- Can the child write the neighbouring hundreds, fifties and tens for a number like 734?
- Can the child write a number in at least three ways (place value, more than, less than)?
- Can the child complete a skip-counting pattern such as 850, 875, 900?
- Can the child make and order 2-digit and 3-digit numbers using the digits 3 and 8?
